I worked at Associated British Foods full-time

    Pros

    Good set of management values
    They value loyalty and experience
    Good people generally
    Interesting set of businesses
    Not very bureaucratic

    Cons

Not a very strategic company. Each business tends to be fairly incrementalist in how it thinks.
Who you know and how you fit is more important than what you do.
Primark is the jewel in the group which allows the other businesses to be complacent

    Advice to Management

Put more pressure on performance outside of Primark - there will be a time when the golden goose stops laying eggs

    Pros

Relatively relaxed environment, flexible working hours as long as you complete your personal tasks. You have free will to do your job to some extent and colleagues are friendly.

    Cons

Office politics happens under the water. Complicated connections with one another. The whole company have hierarchy system and it need to be aware of.

I have been working at Associated British Foods full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Well stocked staff kitchen
    Diverse and interesting businesses
Tends to be a high calibre of individual in head office roles
    Not too much bureaucracy

    Cons

Office is starting to get overcrowded so it's a much less pleasant environment than it used to be
Lack of defined procedure means a lot of improvisation when it would be quicker to follow a protocol
No bonus below quite a senior level

    Advice to Management

Introduce bonus and share scheme (even just a small SAYE scheme would be nice) for lower level staff to give us some incentive to care about the results. The senior management have done very well out of the share price quadrupling over the last few years - maybe let the lower grades share in that?

    Pros

A number of good big brands

    Cons

The company is more built upon networking rather than all going to a single objective

    Advice to Management

A big step would be to be consistent in strategy through out changes in management or board level
