I worked at Associated Foreign Exchange full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fairly good healthcare and work life balance

    Cons

A fairly small team with some big personalities. A bit of infighting. It was a challenge to get work done which required assistance from others. Hiring seemed focused on personality over skills and friends over strangers. Due to this, there were more personalities then talent. Many team members lacked the curiosity and work ethic needed to be great at what they do.

    Advice to Management

I had outgrown my position with nowhere left to go but out the door. I had not received any substantial changes in salary, position or recognition of my contributions. I grew tired of the infighting, lack of team work and inability to pursuade from my level in the hierarchy.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Associated Foreign Exchange full-time

    Pros

It was a good learning experience. Most employees are good people. They offer benefits (expensive ones).

    Cons

Management has very biased attitudes. Micro-managing. Lack of training and communication. Zero room for growth. Only opportunity to bounce around to different departments just to find the same drama day after day. If you're looking to move up, look elsewhere. Poisonous team environments and teamwork is not promoted from the top.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to what is being said by the employees, especially if there are repeat comments. It's not enough to buy bagels once a month and celebrate birthdays. The overall work environment and employee experience MUST be paid attention to.

    Pros

    None, None, None, None, None

    Cons

This company is being hindered from growing by too much corporate politics and favoritism. There is a lot of positions being filled by people that don't have experience in the position, especially in IT.

    Advice to Management

    Owner should reassess management

    Pros

FX industry can be interesting, but you're much better off working elsewhere.

    Cons

If you consider joining the supposed "Business Intelligence" function at AFEX, save yourself the misery and dodge this mess. -Management of this function is clueless. I'll be nice and not name these people directly, but feel free to cross reference the timestamp here with LinkedIn profiles. I've seen BI management demean the people in the technical stack and other groups with very rude emails and comments.... Certain individuals are not not team players, they will throw you under the bus and worse off they’re not qualified for work in BI. -The skill sets of the people in this function are not up to par with industry standard BI. There’s severe dependence on Excel. Don’t expect any of these individuals to know how to drill down into a 4 level correlated or noncorrelated subquery in SQL for modifications. And don’t expect them to know how to work with basic aggregate functions, temptables, variables, agent jobs, SPs etc. The people you will likely be reporting to in this group do not see value in leveraging additional languages and prescriptive technologies (AmazonML, Tensorflow, Python etc) They will keep you confined to manual sloughing around in Excel spreadsheets as it suits the skill set and agenda of the people calling the shots. You will be forced into the role of Excel monkey and will be required to build all reporting exclusively in Excel. The job description is very misleading, and the company will lie to you to get you onboard. -The team is spread across 3 vastly different time zones, you will face major challenges with basic communication, collaboration, getting things approved etc. -They ask for someone with strong SQL, Tableau, SSRS, Python, R etc but you will NOT be in an agile environment that will enable you to utilize these skills. Their very low integrity data is spread across multiple legacy systems, not all in a centralized database (SQL Server) and you will NOT be granted permissions in the databases to run ETL or stored procedures to automate mundane tasks and centralize the data for reporting. -Data belongs in a database. While this seems like a DUH! to anyone with a brain, this is a revolutionary concept for this group and you will be met with intense resistance when trying to streamline and build centralized reporting. -You will also be held responsible for reporting on data that is just plain wrong. For example, AFEX has such bad churn and culture in their sales team (i.e. people quitting or getting fired left and right) that sales is not incentivized to enter/tag the data properly in their CRM system. This creates major headaches when building reporting and you will be held responsible for the sales team’s incorrect data entry. You can’t build legitimate insights on bad data. -Finally, expect to do a lot of tedious manual data entry yourself as well on a daily basis (even in cases where you could easily automate yet aren't granted the permissions to do so) Take your technical skills and Business Intelligence expertise to another company where you can really utilize them and where they'll be appreciated.
