    Pros

Creative colleagues, learn a lot due to amount of responsibilities given to each staffer.

    Cons

Owners are slave-drivers with horrible business sense, which trickled down to VPs who then had no choice but to foist unrealistic expectations, goals, and workloads onto all employees. When employees couldn't meet goals they were quickly fired; others would burnout and move on.

    Advice to Management

Owners need to hire and listen to someone who knows how to run a business based on financial modeling and not via emotion, reaction, and passing trends. Need to compensate employees for the workload given to them.

I worked at Assouline Publishing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The work isn't very demanding. The boutiques are reasonably pleasant environments and within short walking distance to most means of public transportation.

    Cons

Wildly unrealistic sales goals and zero support from upper management. Boutique managers are mostly inexperienced and lack an awareness for retail strategy and the ability to motivate staff. They will drastically cut your hours with no explanation.

The company has a reputation as a "luxury brand" and invests in a great deal of PR and marketing spin to maintain that illusion. But lately they've become more of a vanity press and the quality of their products has declined. Within the industry, Assouline has a reputation for unpaid accounts and bilking freelancers.

The retail operations are severely micro-managed to an absurd degree. It's never an encouraging sign when the CEO feels the need to take it upon himself to merchandise boutiques arbitrarily, going so far as to dictate the specific page books should be opened to.

    Advice to Management

Focus on book publishing and curtailing brick-and-mortar boutique expansion. Treat your employees with respect and professionalism. Do not blame subordinates for your own mistakes.

    Pros

Beautiful store in South Coast Plaza. Beautiful books and home accessories. Great place to work if you love books and travel.

    Cons

Weak management and clueless corporate office. No sales director or sales VP on West Coast. Family owned company.

    Advice to Management

Hire managers with 5 years of experience and treat staff as team and not for own personal gain or agenda.

    Pros

Wonderful coworkers who were very creative, talented, and kind people. From the outside, still appears to be a luxury brand so maybe good for the next job - although on the inside, its cheaply run nightmare.

    Cons

Agreed with the other reviews here 100%. Employees are severely overworked, then verbally abused in return. Extremely unprofessional. There is no reward for your efforts - especially because as soon as you give them what they want, regardless of how good a job - you are promptly replaced. I've never seen such a revolving door before. In the owner's own words, he likes to "squeeze the juice" out of his creative employees until they are dry. They'll promise you job security and compensation rewards, then cut you as soon as you fulfill what they need.

    Advice to Management

Stop using and abusing employees. What goes around comes around.

    Pros

They have beautiful offices with river views. Period. Nothing else good to say.

    Cons

I started as a freelance person but they work their employees to death, sometimes 8 hours overtime daily without compensation. So they hired me to staff on salary so they wouldn't have to pay the hourly wage. When I finished designing 2 books for them, they let me go. They are disorganized, unprofessional, rude, cheap and they like to beat you down. You are nothing. They fire people left and right and just hire the next unsuspecting person. They ruin lives and they don't care.

    Advice to Management

Happy, fulfilled employees do back flips for employers. Employers who beat them down, get honest reviews like this one.
