    I worked at Assurant full-time

    Pros

Good Benefits, 4-10's with fridays for OT, and coworkers are very helpful. Randy was a great Supervisor.

    Cons

Pay could be better, breaks are a little excessive, rather get out a little earlier. Only one entrance in and out of parking area, takes some time to get out in an already congested area in the Emigsville Industrial Park.

I worked at Assurant full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

This was a really challenging job, with a lot of interesting problems to work on. I had a really good relationship with everyone on the business side of things, and was able to accomplish a fair bit to make their lives easier.

    Cons

This company has a very toxic culture within the programming group, reinforced by a history of programmers being treated very poorly by upper management. For a long time, they had a policy of hiring junior / mediocre programmers and low-balling them on salary, which allowed their legacy software to devolve into a ball of mud.

Rather than hiring high-quality programmers and re-factoring their system to make it modular and maintainable, they chose to re-write the system from scratch, spending 4 years writing a new order placement system and 5 years on a new order fulfillment system. These new systems are a mess, architecturally; the boundaries between systems are in the wrong place, the new systems aren't any better written, internally, than the legacy system was (unsurprisingly, since the legacy system is where most of their programmers learned Perl), and data gets copied between databases and falls out of sync on a regular basis.

    Advice to Management

The technical direction of this company needs to completely change. Invest in cleaning up your legacy system, and stop wasting time building new pie-in-the-sky systems.

I have been working at Assurant full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very laid back company. Bosses back up their employees instead of throwing them under the bus. Plenty of opportunity to learn and explore and to advance skills.

The team is in the process of moving from total chaos to a formal agile development process using scrum. Even though it's been many months now, we're still just in the beginning stages, and there's still a long way to go. There's plenty of opportunity for someone to come in if they're willing to step up and make a difference. The problem is, will people follow?

    Above Average Benefits.

    Cons

Most of the team is made up of H1B consultants with a small number of full-time employees. The couple of employees from here don't fit in and are usually left hanging.

The company has a poor social culture and not everyone is accepted or included socially in the group. Most people are usually helpful when asked for work related help, it's just tough fitting in, with a severe lack of guidance.

Nobody goes out to lunch together, which can be counter productive. Very Anti-Social behavior. Employees leave without saying Good-Bye, employees show up in the morning without saying Hello. Nobody acknowledges each other in the hallways. Everyone is just miserable.

    Advice to Management

Poor on-boarding process. Create a mentoring program. Conduct team building exercises. We need a better Holiday party at the end of the year.
