I have been working at Astellas Pharma US full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Culture is a huge emphasis at this company. Focus is on doing the right thing for patients. Innovation and collaboration are valued.

    Cons

Common challenges to the pharma industry. Cost, access to products, access to accounts. These are not unique to this company. Relatively flat org chart means fewer promotions.

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on corp. culture and people development. It is a strength.

I worked at Astellas Pharma US full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

None. Keeps useless incompetent personnel who are here more than 10 years and hires new incompetent personnel

    Cons

abusive, incompetent, failed leadership from Director and above.

    Advice to Management

Dear Japan, Keep people who work and not wrap presents. Keep people who have really worked rather than gossipers. Keep stable supportive people and fire incompetent assumption seekers. Reduce Northbrook personnel by 50% and get rid of the personnel who do not do real work but hide behind words. Some people are there only to throw words like grit and get a salary and bonus. Medical affairs is a lost cause.

I worked at Astellas Pharma US full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits are nice, but a highly political environment in HR and leadership is not supportive. Whispers turn into rumors and assumptions become facts, ultimately derailing careers. Do not recommend this as a positive work environment. Dreaded going into work and everyone is afraid that their job could be eliminated. Run.

    Cons

Pipeline is not strong, overspending is common for this small pharma company, decisions are made in Japan and can frustrate US employees, and the corporate politics make working here miserable.

    Advice to Management

To Japan: US leaders are feared and not respected. It starts at the top.

I worked at Astellas Pharma US (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility to work from home or office as job required

    Cons

Not allowed enough time for training; no communication between personnel training and supervisor; unclear, and unrealistic expectations; security policies not clear to management and not set up before first day; laptop set up with new software without anyone knowing about it and expecting work to be performed as if it was the same when it was not; supervisor was not interested in seeing work and then contacted staffing agency to terminate me because I did not perform work quickly enough when it was complex. New hire orientation process handled by contractor staffing agency, Access to databases took almost the entire time I was there and then was not correct. Was told that staff were treated like family and adults and it was a lie.

    Advice to Management

Become familiar with new hire process; ensure that access is ready before or shortly after starting; oversee/familiarize quality of work prior to terminating and allow enough time to train on complex work. Clarify training requirements and communicate with personnel performing training. Set realistic expectations for new personnel: even personnel with expert word processing skills will need at least one month to learn how to process template documents.

    Pros

Family can collect on Life Insurance or Long Term Diasbility

    Cons

This department has always been toxic and racist and now it is killing people.
The arrogant leadership is now killing people to save their jobs because of a very poorly planned program. A three year project is being shoved in 9 months..and we have had three emrgencies in the last month with employees being rushed to the hospital, employees are collapsing and literally dying....

    Advice to Management

Needs serious overhaul of IT leadership, The department head and all his direct reports need to be replaced immediately for the company to save face! The sweatshop of AMERICA in Northbrook illinois.....

I worked at Astellas Pharma US full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for Astellas as a company. Good benefits and good package.(but as they say, there is always a catch and If you work in IT ...you are doomed".)

    Cons

IT department has no strategy. No respect for employees. Leader is over his head, arrogant. Senior IT leaders always find a scape goat to place the blame on. Does not respect diversity, no respect for women. In fact there is no woman who is above the title of senior manager. Very racist. Will work everyone too hard and if one thing goes wrong, the person who works so hard gets fired. There is no alignment within Senior IT leaders and so much in-fighting, politics within such a small team, brings down the morale of the whole team. Contractors and Consultants are treated as 2nd or 3rd class human beings.Total disrespect to consultants & contractors.

    Advice to Management

Actually this is to the Company Senior Management. Astellas overall is a good place to work but your IT Department is running a "mafia" like operation spoiling the name of the company. Review all the exit interviews from IT, the story will unfold. No prior IT employee will recommend this work place for anyone. Cleanup the IT leadership and make it a great place to work as the rest of Astellas.

"Overall company fine, Corp IT is very TOXIC"

Current Employee - IT Manager in Northbrook, IL

I have been working at Astellas Pharma US full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Company benefits are exceptional. Plenty of budget for projects.

    Cons

Unethical and incompetent Corp IT group. It is scary to have an opinion that doesn't match what the leadership wants to hear. People are very good at blaming others for their poor decisions. It is a shame that the different IT groups feel like they are in competition with each other. This leads to cover-up activities which the other IT groups and Japan aren't aware of.

    Advice to Management

Change can't happen where there is no trust. Loyalty is valued over competency in Corp IT. It is obvious who needs to go, just have the courage to make the change.
