I have been working at Astor Chocolate for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great team, all inclusive, genuinely want to help you grow, diverse, good management in all departments, great administrative support, a lot of opportunity, honest company, always looking to do better and asking all employees what they can do better. Great work ethic.

    Cons

Not that many compared to other companies I have worked in.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing more of what you're doing!

I worked at Astor Chocolate full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Chocolate is a plus, but that is obvious. The early Fridays were nice but didn't make up for the week of madness

    Cons

There is absolutely no communication, between departments and with in departments. When there is communication though, it makes you feel stupid and like you can do nothing right. It was hard to get through a day without wanting to quit on the spot. It was even harder to actually drag myself there day after day. The compensation was pennies compared to what the "community" members were making. The treatment of... staff was LAUGHABLE. Unless you were a sales person or part of the community, you were replaceable. Also, no room for growth.

I have been working at Astor Chocolate full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Chocolate samples Early closings on Fridays

    Cons

    - Lack of management; self centered leadership - Zero work culture and extremely high turnover rate - Zero productivity and no professional processes in place. Whoever screams the loudest, gets their way type of mentality - Favoritism of Jewish community is glaring and borderline illegal, uncomfortable and at times toxic work environment -Unrealistic work expectations with way below average pay

    Advice to Management

Don’t turn a blind eye to the reasons why people are always quitting. Makes changes to value and respect your employees.

I worked at Astor Chocolate full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Get to be involved in tasting new flavors... once a year.

    Cons

    - It’s expected for their employees to take on more work without proper compensation. - Compensation is way below average and you get push back when you ask for a yearly review/raise. - When employees leave, their roles are not replaced accordingly so employee’s roles/responsibility change without management consulting the team. - Employee turnover is VERY high, yet management doesn’t acknowledge that there is a... reason why this is happening. - THERE IS NO WORK CULTURE AT ALL. It is very obvious that there is a cultural difference and that people in the community are treated better/ put on pedestal over non community members. - Upper management don’t know what each person does on their team. - The lack of communication between departments and management is concerning. Nobody listens to anyone and management has a “no one is to blame” mentality when something goes wrong so no one takes responsibility. - There is no proper HR department. When there is a problem no one goes to HR because they won’t take you seriously and nothing gets resolved.

    Pros

CEO is very involved and knows all of his employees. Good place to work with a family. HR really tries to make everyone happy. Office closes early Fridays. Interesting a delicious product.

    Cons

Some of the management should be reassessed. Strong support staff but management in some departments can use a change. Workload can really vary by department and some are better than others.

I worked at Astor Chocolate full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Amazing staff, people there are nice, reasonable, and understanding. They pride themselves on a great employee turnover rate, and it's true - they do their utmost to keep people satisfied in their jobs, and will try hard to keep people in the company. Even if a person's job becomes no longer needed, they will try hard to find them something else to do. The president is very accessible and makes his way around the... building greeting people. All in all, very pleasant, and a great work-life balance.

    Cons

Not the place to be if you want to be assured of career growth and development. It's not so much a part of their culture, though they do help employees develop on an as-needed basis. But don't go there expecting it. There also isn't much employee progression in the company in general. Sales people remain sales people, graphic designers remain such, etc. Not a hard and fast rule, but again, don't go there with... the assumption that you will develop and move up. Also, pay is not great, unless you are in the stronger negotiating position. Once you are already there, you are usually in the weaker position...
