I worked at Atkins full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

During my 5 years at Atkins I worked with may great people who excelled in spite of the company, including their best CEO, Keith Clarke.

Once you reach promotion to senior management, the professional development opportunities are excellent.

    Cons

Low value, poor salary and benefits to no senior employees. Focus on bottom line rather than professional excellence.

    Advice to Management

Under new Canadian ownership, SNC Lavalin should aggressively assess successful service lines, cut corporate fat, improve employee benefits and retention, and inject new life into the organization.

I worked at Atkins full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Other employees are friendly
Working hours are short (general 9-5)
Fairly easy to talk to people of different senioritities
    No overtime/weekend work expected

    Cons

-People very friendly but generally fairly unambitious compared to other firms, most of the good people leave within 2 years or so.
-There is no process or "way of doing things" it's very much just winging it. You are given no intellectual property to help you so everything is made from scratch. They try to sell this as an opportunity but it isn't.
-Line management awful, really unprofessional, based up favouritism and who sucks up the best rather than merit and exit interviews are run by your line management... which makes no sense!
-Resourcing pretty much non-existent, if you are unhappy you will not be moved as that is not a priority to the business.
-Pay sub-par no matter what your day-rate.

All of these factors end up to poor delivery for clients.

If you are going to work here make sure you see it for what it is, a stepping stone to your actual career.

    Advice to Management

Spend some money on training your people and developing your propositions!

    Pros

used to have very good muticultural working environment. Good benifit!

    Cons

A bad top management strategy ruined the middle-bottom level working culture. But anyway, it is accquired by another public company now.

    Advice to Management

Management should be based on the industry and project needs.

    I worked at Atkins full-time

    Pros

There are really talented and very loyal staff.

    Cons

You are only as good as your allocations, productivity drops and you are given notice. It is then your responsibility to secure internal movement, not supported by HR or your LM.

    Advice to Management

Be honest, it is purely about profit and returns for shareholders. Staff are a commodity.

I worked at Atkins full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Atkins has, in recent years, become a much more forward looking company. The salary / package is reasonable for the industry and pay reviews have been the norm, even in difficult times. Diversity is taken more seriously now that it was in the past but there is still some way to go.

    Cons

The recently announced takeover by SNC Lavalin may not be so good for UK staff.
Atkins has never been great at working as one company - competition between business units means cross functional teams are unusual and as a result, transferring around the organisation is not as easy as it should be.
Senior positions are more likely to be recruited externally than from the pool of internal talent which is often overlooked.

    Advice to Management

Look to developing internal talent before going to the external recruitment market.
