    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Direct supervisor makes work experience very positive. Firm has a clear vision for growth. Talented and trusted leadership. Great firm with great people on a positive trajectory.

    Cons

Centralized decision making authority manages direction of growth well but creates cumbersome and slow approval process. Extensive systems and processes create abundance of internal focused work.

    Advice to Management

Accelerate new hires. Empower and delegate decision authority. Invest in M&A to grow TPO and take advantage of established systems and processes.

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Atkins is great at recruiting (though poor at retention), so you are surrounded by highly skilled coworkers with great resumes. Their great resumes mean they can win and you can work on some once in a lifetime projects. The poor at retention aspect means you will have opportunities to step into leadership rolls on projects that you would not get at most other firms. Beware of getting tagged with the clients'... dissatisfaction over staff departures though (it's hard to make a client happy when they are on their third or fourth project manager).

    Cons

In order to meet the profit margins promised to its stockholders, Atkins is transitioning to a firm that only serves big clients or mega projects. Atkins is dropping its smaller clients by the 100's. If your specialty is big or even "mega" clients, Atkins is the place for you. If not, use opportunities from the high staff turnover to build your resume. But get out before you get the reputation of not being able... to deliver finished projects to the client's satisfaction (because your project team members keep leaving). Find yourself a niche at Atkins where you can bill 40 hours a week to one project or client will keep you from suffering the weekly conversations about being more billable.

    Advice to Management

Your clients purchase your people's time. If you see and treat your people as replaceable your clients will see your firm as replaceable. In fact, they already do.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    co workers, client interface opportunities

    Cons

lack of continuity in management, lack of execution of strategy, lack of cohesive vision, very inconsistent personnel management, complete lack of performance based incentives at a mid manager/career level, lack of operational guidelines for such simple things as bid generation and scope review, absolutely no opportunities for cross discipline or other types of training, many senior staff just looking for a good... exit opportunity, many managers are so frightened for their security that they are not making decisions for sustainable success, but simply for short term survival

    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Variety of work Good technical teams Great progression (to a point) Good office locations and flexible working Great graduate scheme

    Cons

Poor middle management, Lack of direction and glass ceiling hit once you hit certain grades Pay/grades are not transparent Expected to work beyond your contracted hours for no reward

    Advice to Management

Atkins is what you make of it, work hard and get to know the right people you will go far. Their apprentice and grad scheme is excellent. Generally a great company to work for if you put the graft in

I worked at Atkins for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Good for early career development

    Cons

High rate of redundancy with constant change of organisation structure and line management

    Advice to Management

Be open about your HR issues and consider coming into line with other FTSE companies when its time to say goodbye to the staff who have given their all - be open with your redundancy terms which are out of step.
