"A poorly managed firm that hasn't come to grips with the fact it was acquired"

I have been working at Atkins

      Pros

Good office network. Many talenet and dedicated people, especially at the entry and mid-levels. Flexible work environment.

      Cons

Low pay except for senior management. Atkins North America is the product of the acquisition of PBSJ by UK-based Atkins in 2010. Yet most former PBSJ senior management don't act like anything has changed. Also, lots of political maneuvering by senior managers to protect their turf. A highly "silo-ed" environment with very little...

      Advice to Management

Time to reorganize. Break down barriers between divisions and regions. Ongoing layoffs hurt morale. Over-emphasis on meeting weekly producitivty numbers diminishes marketing. "Atkins" is a new brand in the US so it needs to think like a start-up.

I have been working at Atkins

      Pros

Good opportunity for beginning Engineers or Scientists to get a leg in the door for environment science, construction, or Civil engineering.

      Cons

Room for career development or advancement is limited. After 2-3 years hear you will become stagnant due to the poor leadership of the senior management.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Variety of projects to work on. Career progression is decent for a large organisation. Flexible benefits are decent.

      Cons

Work/life balance isn't as good as the company claims, not since the takeover by SNC-Lavalin. This is a particular problem because Atkins selling point vis-a-vis their competitors has always been that that the work/life balance is superior, with the trade-off being a lower salary than the likes of other engineering consultancies. However since the takeover work/life balance has got progressively worse, and in addition...

      Advice to Management

Reign in the poor reporting culture and encourage employees to report the actual hours they work rather than the silly rules of never reporting more than 37.5.

I worked at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

      - Variety of projects (also see cons), nice people to work with who appreciate your contribution and going the extra mile. - Some of the benefits are quite good - but often matched at the same level as other consultancies: buy/sell extra holidays, BUPA, gym membership, etc. - Not sure the recent merge with SNC-Lavalin will change anything.

      Cons

      - Too much red tape, senior management seems to be detached from the rest of the company. - London office amenities are terrible - often crowded, nowhere to sit. Useless hot-desk system as regulars tend to frequent the same spot every day. Heating/cooling is sub-par, we had 2 weeks without heating in one wing during the worst of the winter in 2016... - Focus on billable hours/productivity...

      Advice to Management

      - Pull your head out of the sand. - Change work distribution based on experience, not costs. - Listen to your staff, and stop ignoring suggestions for improvement and rebuff them with lip-service. - Some teams have time and budget for self/team-development, why not all? - Stop sending out useless 'anonym'* company surveys that will give you whatever results you want to get out of it. Talk to your people regularly...

      I worked at Atkins part-time

      Pros

Flexible working, well educated and intellectually stimulating colleagues

      Cons

Senior management's fondness for reorganising / promoting / demoting staff with no clear objective or measurable outcomes has resulted in low staff morale and an appallingly high turnover. Clients have little confidence in senior management so do not place any larger (economically viable) packages of work, preferring to direct and manage...
