    I worked at Atmel full-time

    Pros

With the acquisition by Microchip, there are no "pros"

    Cons

The new Steve can not compare to Steve Laub. Laub had integrity, was honest and was loyal to the stockholders and employees. We may have not liked what he had to say, but when he said it you knew he meant it.

    Advice to Management

Learn from Atmel and keep that culture!

    Pros

Very nice relaxed environment where the engineers are treated very well and treat each other with the respect and no back stabbing like you see in typical hi tech companies in silicon valley. I worked at six hi tech companies before Atmel and NONE of them had such a nice environment.

    Cons

Unfortunately they are not doing very well and will getting sold soon and major layoffs will follow whether they get sold or not.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the core business (MCU) and forget about hyped areas like the IoT.

I have been working at Atmel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The most striking thing about working here is the team of people they put together. The overwhelming majority are highly motivated in their positions, so it's easy to be highly motivated in mine. It's not a competition, it's a team effort. Yeah, that's cliche, but it's true here and I don't know how else to express it.
It is an engaging and personally challenging (in a good way) place to work. The team is "light," meaning you'll carry more responsibility and work load. I find this professionally satisfying.
Salary is competitive and there is a decent incentive plan.
Company values are excellent inside and out.
Senior management clearly sends the message it is accessible. They are open to hearing ideas and implement the good ones.

    Cons

As mentioned in the pros section, work load and personal responsibility here are high. Don't work here unless you will commit to the job. The balance between work and disconnected personal life is "OK." Atmel is far from being a start-up, but there are start-up tendencies in Atmel. We're regularly introducing new product and entering new markets. Although Atmel can be thought of as a world class semiconductor company, it is on the small side in that category. That too causes various "all hands on deck" moments.

    Advice to Management

Project scheduling could use some work, but I've found that true of most companies.
