I have been working at Atomic Weapons Establishment

    Pros

People are dedicated. Want to do good work. Leading technologies and top researchers. Trying hard to commercialize the operations from civil service practices. Many long-time employees that help you adapt.

    Cons

Don't always get collaboration. The hiring process is time-consuming (lengthy) with a lot of waiting for actions. Some management seek to blame people rather than understanding perspectives before taking covert punitive actions.

    Advice to Management

Seek first to understand (Covey). Continue the improvement journey understanding it isn't always a smooth road, but people are working hard to achieve.

I worked at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time for more than 9 years

    Pros

At the time the pension was good and the people I worked with were fantastic.

    Cons

Too much red tape, wasteful with money, hire incompetent contractors that have not accountability and leave it to the staff of AWE to rectify, terrible management who seem to to talk about change but never make it.

    Advice to Management

Fire most of the management as they don't have a clue, they also need to start communicating with each other across the site to work out ways of saving money. Too much disconnect between the management and their staff and also very little respect. Promote people who actually deserve it and make sure their pay reflects that. The company provides an important service to the security of our country, they need to start giving...

I have been working at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

9-day fortnight, not going anywhere (literally), relaxed working environment,

    Cons

Resistant to change, 1950's project management outlook, Functionally oriented (low PM authority), security can be a bit of a pain

    Advice to Management

Be more receptive to adopting new methodologies and practices, especially in project management.

I worked at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time

    Pros

Great if you dont want to work and are a bully you will fit in with the culture.

    Cons

Managment team is highley political, abusive to staff, encourages bullying and discrimination and is quite happy to steal taxpayers and shareholders money. In order to be promoted you must betray and stab your colleagues in the back. Compitance is frowned upon and those who want work are forced out.

    Advice to Management

Resign you are a threat to the nations security.

I have been working at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time for more than 6 years

      Pros

Good team spirit, workers trying to make a difference

      Cons

No promotion chances due to ESH management employing contract mates at high salaries. No promotion in ESH over last 2 years. Senior ESH post waste of time as ties up management doing charts instead of day to day work

      Advice to Management

Clear out ESH management and stop paying contractor mates big sums of money

      Approves of CEO

I have been working at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time for more than 4 years

      Pros

Many good individuals and interesting work. Some training is available. Most people are committed to the job are proud with what they do.

      Cons

Multiple layers of regulation. Constantly changing structures and processes. Overly complicate everything, from adding extra safety systems to machinery that doesn't work, to filling out a massive form and three approvals just to buy something that costs £10.

      Advice to Management

Too many senior managers that do not understand what the day to day job entails. Get single processes for the entire organisation. Stop letting the various functions each independently try to change working practices with out consulting any other part of AWE.

      Pros

Very Interesting work Generally nice people to work with Flexible approach to work

      Cons

Highly bureaucratic, paperwork is more valued then actual work Incompetent management and leadership Company more concerned about appearance then getting work done A very wasteful culture in resources and people

      Advice to Management

Put more emphasis on people then stupid yearly objectives and you might get something done Stop celebrating success based on distorted statistics

I worked at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time

      Pros

Interesting work. Flexi-time. Comprehensive training. 9-day fortnight. Friendly teams. Good holiday.

      Cons

Everything HR related. They are truly incompetent in my experience; I can't emphasise that enough. Ridiculous paperwork and overly-complex protocol slows progress on even the simplest tasks to a crawl. Pension looks like it's going to get a lot worse pretty soon.

      Advice to Management

Pay the engineers & scientists (the people who actually make what the company sells) more. Cut down on red-tape and introduce some sort of accountability so that problems get sorted instead of passed around.

      "Poor Management"

      StarStarStarStarStar
        Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
        Negative Outlook

I have been working at Atomic Weapons Establishment full-time

        Pros

There is some interesting work available and the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. Flexible working and interactions with a range of other organisations are positives

        Cons

Poor management , despite constant promise of change there is still no evidence of any on the horizon. Problems are brushed under the carpet rather than dealt with, which inevitably causes greater issues. Also, it is disappointing that being the offspring of a director allows you surprisingly quick promotion and the opportunity to indulge in pointless vanity projects

        Advice to Management

Stop promoting people into management positions who shouldn't be there and deal with problems rather than moving them around
