I worked at Auburn University full-time for more than 4 years

          Pros

Work/life balance is ok if you're in the right department. It will differ based on the managers. Free generic prescriptions through their on-campus pharmacy, if you are on their insurance. Matching retirement is generous, but takes 5 years on the voluntary plan and 10 years on the mandatory retirement plan to be vested. 2 weeks off at Christmas, with a lot of vacation and sick time off, is the best perk.

          Cons

Salary is abysmal. You will take a major cut in pay from anywhere else. The perks are what keep you there. Since it's government funded and so large, there are a lot of rules and red tape for everything. It can be political and about "who you know." Without a master's degree, you have a very slim chance at advancement in any of the professional fields.

            Cons

The university focus changes with every new president or higher admin over your division. If you aren't a priority, be prepared for your division to be left behind. Right now it's research, enrollment, and development getting all of the love and they're being recruited competitively, while other areas and positions are grandfathered into a decades-old pay structure that leaves them behind the newer employees with far...

            Advice to Management

All the cheerleading, team building exercises, and motivational speeches in the world can't replace putting true support behind your employees. The Fortune 500 company attitude is costing you the family feeling that used to actually exist here. Pay people what they're worth (what the new employees make), stop overloading them, and give monetary value to tasks to compensate fairly instead of forcing them to do the dirty...
