I worked at Auctiva full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Everybody is so nice and friendly.
    - Every engineer works as a team to solve problems.
    - Awesome learning environment
    - Full kitchen stocked with food and drinks
    - Awesome softball team

    Cons

Ever since the acquisition by Alibaba, everything fell apart. Some great projects were terminated because Alibaba thought those projects were competing with their existing products. So, engineers were laid off. The branch in San Jose was closed down. Great employees in the Chico branch were slowly leaving because it seems there was no clear direction with Auctiva after it was sold.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps bring every employee up to speed to what's going on before the acquisition. They could then be prepared no matter what the outcome was. By terminating some projects and closing down the branch in San Jose all of a sudden, some employees took it very hard.

I worked at Auctiva full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Small company, lack of bureaucracy, nimble in development. great holiday bonuses for long time employees

    Cons

No room for growth, once the company was sold to a chinese company things went down hill

    Advice to Management

Be forthcoming with employees. On my last review before I quit, I was told my lack of enthusiasm was holding me back from advancing, and getting additional responsibility. When I had been previously asking over and over again for advancement, and additional responsibility. You were just not ready to advance me. If you had been honest about that, and not wanting to move me up in my role, I would have rated you higher.

    Pros

Fun environment. Motivated people are rewarded monetarily and with continuous career growth.

    Cons

Rapid change of pace as the company grows leads to some chaos.

    Advice to Management

Keep a focus on developing your technical people to keep ahead of the competition.

I worked at Auctiva full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Very talented group of engineers
    - Will be given time to learn the technologies the company uses
    - Great work/life balance
    - Decent benefits apart from base pay.
    - Engineers are respected for the work they do.

    Cons

    - Pay is poor. Not competitive with companies in the Chico area.
    - Hard to get promoted
    - Upper management does not have a vision for the company. Within 2 years, the company shifted its focus too many times
    - Very little reuse of what is already built. If they start something new, similar useful projects are just thrown away.

    Advice to Management

    - Have a better vision for the company's future
    - Do more to retain employees.

"Great place to work for Software Developers"

I worked at Auctiva full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ability to work on the latest technology with other very skilled software developers. Very open to change and trying out new ideas. Able to recognize talent and advance quickly if you deserve it. Solid software development practices and departments. Very nice place to work. Very competitive salaries for Northern CA.

    Cons

While I was there, the constant shuffling of teams and projects left something to be desired. Made it a bit hard for a manager to get a core group developers to work together cohesively.

    Advice to Management

I'm sure management is different than while I was there - but I would say make sure to take care of your good team leads. Because they are the cornerstone of all the projects, and if they jump ship it's a huge hit to the company.

I worked at Auctiva full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great opportunity for junior engineers to jump in and contribute. Within a month of joining the company I was given a very large and important project. It felt really awesome to have that much trust straight out of the gate. It was a great way for me to build a foundation for the rest of my career.

    Cons

Senior management isn't interested in employee's ideas. A co-worker of mine had a great idea to provide an innovative and delightful experience to our users. Our idea was shot down. A few months later a competitor implemented the idea and stole a lot of our customers.

    Advice to Management

Listen to to your employees and practice deep customer empathy. You might learn something.

I worked at Auctiva full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very experienced developers / programmers. A ton of knowledge exists in development.

    Cons

You don't have any say in to projects and what's going on. Flagship products are pretty old. Ideas for new projects and properly flushed out before being executed.

    Advice to Management

Give developers a bit more say in how things get done. Let proper innovation happen and actually develop a new, innovative product.

    Pros

Open to new technology in legacy modifications. Clear channels to management.

    Cons

Few opportunities to develop a new application. Excellent benefits package, a non-competitive salary works well in the Chico area.

    Advice to Management

Let original pieces stand untouched, additional input offers little to productivity.

    Pros

    Close to home. It's a 5min drive and a 10min bike ride.

    Cons

No raises, disrespectful coworkers, management refuses to allow for extra time to get things done right the first time.

    Advice to Management

Pay us what we are worth. Listen to what your employees tell you.
