I worked at Augsburg College part-time

    Pros

The individuals that I worked with directly within my program were great.

    Cons

The college President and his staff were incredibly unprofessional and disrespectful to those below them. Never had I worked in such an unhealthy work environment before.

    Advice to Management

Be respectful and mature adults. Do not undermine your employers; work as a team. It would also be helpful to improve your email etiquette.

I worked at Augsburg College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I appreciated the community of colleagues that I worked with. They were committed, kind, and respectful.

    Cons

We struggled with enrollment at the time, so staffing consistency was challenging.

I have been working at Augsburg College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Mission Focused school that puts students first. Great PTO/vacation/sick. Good retirement benefits after 5 years of service.

    Cons

Commuting/parking. Staff are often seen as replaceable. Low chance for advancement. Lower salary range than other competitors.

    Pros

Many good people in the working ranks. People don't stay here unless they value the collegiate environment as one of the benefits. Most departments reflect much more egalitarian values than their corporate counterparts. There's a big emphasis on continually trying to increase workforce diversity.

    Cons

Upper management seems to continue to grow and lack accountability. Major missteps are generally represented as undiagnoseable or systemic and are not connected to accountable leadership positions.

    Advice to Management

While staffing reductions are regularly targeted to decrease spending, management doesn't strategically plan for the reduction in quality/service those reductions will cause or realistically detail any gains to efficiency that will offset those reductions. It's just a bad budgeting habit.

I have been working at Augsburg College part-time

    Pros

Fair amount of autonomy in the classroom

    Cons

Low salary, little support for an instructor that comes in sporadically.

    Advice to Management

Make more effort to connect with adjunct faculty - feeling connected makes workers stick around longer.

    Pros

This is a mission-driven school that really practices what it preaches and serves such a diverse, interesting, activist student body. People stick around a long time - most people in my department have been there over 8 years, with several over 20 years. HR and my department have been supportive of flex schedules and working from home.

    Cons

Constant budget issues - not uncommon for small liberal arts schools without big-name recognition. Always asking staff to "do more with less" which is...OK, I guess, except that has been the message for 5+ years. Low pay.

I worked at Augsburg College full-time

    Pros

Augsburg College has an amazing mission that is shared throughout the campus - students, faculty, and staff alike live and breathe it.

    Cons

Augsburg College often runs at a financial deficit - trying to make ends meet, keep buildings maintained, and serve its students is pretty near to impossible on the revenue it generates (or decisions made about how to use that revenue)

    Advice to Management

Eliminate the extraneous and don't try to be everything to everybody - nobody wins and people feel under-supported and underpaid
