I have been working at Austin Energy full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great benefits and pay. Once you make the 6 month cut off you are in for life. Fairly progressive for a utility company.

    Cons

Moving up or getting a raise is almost impossible. Middle management is a choke point for people in the field and upper management.

I have been working at Austin Energy full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The City of Austin has great benefits. I will be retiring from Austin Energy with 23 years of service and I am still young enough to now seek work elsewhere. That is practically unheard of. The holidays and flex time are nice too.

    Cons

Once your hired with the city there is little to no opportunities for promotion within a group. You have to transfer to other groups to move up, which is also the only way to get a raise other than the cost of living increase. Although for the last few years the raise is lower than the COL increase.
