I worked at Austin Industries full-time

    Pros

Austin has awesome benefits, being an employee owned company is great.

    Cons

Upper Management is clueless. They let the sub-contractors run the job. They do not train new college grads who never worked on a construction site. There is no set way of doing things - everyone does their job different. What is ok for one person is not Ok for another. No one works together.

    Advice to Management

Do better interviewing, create a better work environment.

I worked at Austin Industries full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The commercial company is top notch, you will not find a better group of people to work with.
The industrial company is a very successful organization
Like any other place you will get to work with a lot of great people.

    Cons

All of these comments will relate specifically to Austin Bridge and Road.
There are too many VP's for what little work they have in their backlog, and given their lack of work this leads to excessive micro management.
They will scrutinize their employees for enforcing the contract on their primary owner, TXDOT.
There are a lot of fiefdoms within the organization, inadvertently offend the wrong queen and you will have an entire group of people within the organization on your bad side. And they will throw an outsider under the bus and not think twice.
Their contract administration is painfully tedious.
Their compensation for staff and hourly employees is far below market standards.
Their big sale to their employees is their ESOP. And they are outright deceptive about its value. It only has value if you stay there for many years and then it is prohibitive to leave.
The only profitable part of the company is their asphalt operations, and this is due to their outside sales and strategic placement of plants around the DFW area.
They promote far slower than their counterparts.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and start over. Compensate people for their value, and don't hold your performers hostage covering for good ole boys.

As a college intern I have learned so much from my time at Austin. It is a comfortable atmosphere where I am able to fully engage with the people around me, and they are always willing to answer any questions I have. I work closely with my mentor and am able to contribute to everyday tasks and projects that show me what a career in my field will be like. It is a great place to work and gain valuable experience.

I have been working at Austin Industries (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Austin truly believes in and invests in their employees. As an employee-owned company in a service focused industry the company truly invests in their people and wants employee-owners to succeed. They are good at identifying personal strengths and putting you in a position to maximize your impact within the company. They are also very supportive of new ideas and suggestions for organizational improvement.

The company's backlog is the strongest that it has ever been, and job security is very stable. However, even in down times the company focuses on taking care of their employees.

    Cons

As a construction company, many people office in different locations and in different jobsite offices. Because of this, there are many teams that may be less connected than others.
