I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time

    Pros

Amazing mission, passion, volunteers and staff. Issue that's on an "upswing". I see plenty of staff accommodating working hours by working from home, etc. The pay scale is competitive with any nonprofit I've worked at.

    Cons

Everyone looks at AS with rose colored glasses. How it was so wonderful before. But then why are we spending so much time cleaning up things like the video from 2009 and other poor decisions of the past? Time for the organization to move forward with the new leadership we have in place. It spends way too much time looking back, not enough looking forward. We hold onto angry employees too long.

    Advice to Management

Ignore the bitter ramblings of past employees on here and focus on continuing to improve the lives of people and families affected by Autism Spectrum disorder. This organization does amazing work, don't sweat the small stuff, the mission is too important.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Autism Speaks full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Terrific advocacy for the cause, strong science programs

    Cons

Top heavy, disconnect between management and staff, no corporate culture, Liz Feld (President) and Rob Ring (Chief Science Officer) are terrible and completely out of touch. Corporate poilicy discourages work/life balance and also adheres to 1950s style work emvironment e.g. no telecommuting, must work in an office at corporate.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and join us in the 21st century.

I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great mission to work for and very motivating meeting and helping families. Always something new with events, programs, and services. Fairly new company (est 2005) with lots of growth potential.

    Cons

Quite a bit of turnover in staff in recent years; lacks consistency in management styles with new leadership coming in with new mission.

    Advice to Management

Create more transparency from senior staff to lower staff so that all feel included in the direction of the organization under new leadership.

I have been working at Autism Speaks

    Pros

A lot of changes and potential with a new level of focus, heading in a proactive direction. Much time will be spent leveling out, getting organized and making needed investments in infrastructure and raising standards. High hopes to see the org on a list of competitive places to work thereafter. The mission is meaningful to millions.

    Cons

Being flexible to changing priorities is a must at most non-profit foundations. But right now at this org it's the only way to exist. Change, even for the better, is not easy and can be difficult for some to negotiate. A culture of excuses is a hard habit to break after so long. Focus on accountability at all levels and challenge employees to raise standards.

    Advice to Management

Look at current state of the org from the perspective of employees at all levels, especially while beginning to shift to a culture of accountability. Invest in employees that demonstrate they want to see the org succeed.
