I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time

      Pros

Core of passionate people, organization generally has a good brand name, material support from New York headquarters is adequate, can impact families at this organization

      Cons

Unrealistic expectations from upper management, passive-aggressive field staff leader whose patronizing cheerleading is very transparent and insulting, health benefits are below industry standard, no room for employee voices-- do what they say and do it the want they want it done or else.

      Advice to Management

More give and take for idea sharing with all staff, believe in the people on the front lines and things will improve. Staff turnover is killing organization

I worked at Autism Speaks full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

      - The day-to-day interactions with families, and individuals with autism were generally positive and rewarding. - Extraordinary volunteers make the organization shine in some communities. - Advocating on behalf of a well-known brand was both a Pro and a Con. - No micromanaging for the bulk of my time there. - Some of the internal systems were sophisticated (Payroll, Social Media, Travel reimbursement). - I learned...

      Cons

      - My boss had five different bosses over the course of three years. That really says it all. - National priorities were constantly changing, processes and systems were rotating in and out on a monthly basis, chapter priorities were pushed aside, and we never really knew if we achieved anything. - There was a total, 100% disconnect between the NY HQ and the chapters/major market staff. There were NY/NJ staff who tried...

      Advice to Management

Giving advice to this organization is a lesson in frustration. What's the point? They won't listen.

I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Autism Speaks has incredible history in the community, and truly made "autism" a household conversation around the world. What Autism Speaks has done for awareness, research, treatment and advocacy worldwide is outstanding. Being a part of that mission, as well as having the opportunity to build relationships in the local community, is incredibly rewarding.

      Cons

There are unfortunately many concerns I have as an employee. There is a great lack of communication from top NYC leadership down to the field, and this could come from too many (highly compensated) executive hands in the cookie jar. Field staff, who have some of the toughest responsibilities (i.e. fundraising for the mission of the organization) do not receive competitive pay and benefits for the workload and time required....

      Advice to Management

Improve communication across all departments. Learn the markets - recognize that blanket efforts and strategy are poor branding choices. Give greater consideration to pay and benefits to remain competitive in the fast-paced world of non-profits. Every organization has growing pains, especially during times of transition. However, the turnover at Autism Speaks should be cause for deep concern.

I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

-Salary is better than some non-profits

      Cons

-Highly bureaucratic so it takes forever to execute anything at the local level with processes that are constantly changing without informing the staff. -The leadership uses fear tactics to threaten employees who may not reach revenue goal and fails to provide proper training and resources. -Staff who achieve revenue goals aren't rewarded or even acknowledged -Leadership fails to give deliverables needed to execute...

I have been working at Autism Speaks full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Great mission to work for and very motivating meeting and helping families. Always something new with events, programs, and services. Fairly new company (est 2005) with lots of growth potential.

      Cons

Quite a bit of turnover in staff in recent years; lacks consistency in management styles with new leadership coming in with new mission.

      Advice to Management

Create more transparency from senior staff to lower staff so that all feel included in the direction of the organization under new leadership.
