A hard job
May 15, 2015 - Behavioral Interventionist in Santa Ana, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-You learn a lot about about the field of Autism. -Can also learn a lot about ABA and behavior in general. IF you have a supportive Supervisor you learn even more. -Can be very challenged, constantly changing, quick paced.
Cons
-Inconsistent hours due to all the cancellations. Do not get paid consistently. -Cancellation pay is minimum wage. -No benefits of any kind until you work for 3 months straight with a minimum of 25 hours a week. This is hard to do because of all the cancellations. You may not get benefits til 6 months or more later! -Not very much training given to people new to the field. I felt very unsupported in the beginning, and not confident in what I was doing. I did not know how to handle many situations or do any parent education. -LOTS of driving. -Can be isolating, you are working in the homes and essentially have NO co-workers. -The job itself is very challenging, many high stress situations, children with a lot of behavior who will scream, bite, hit etc.. -Can be very exhausting, having to bring in NEW toys and activities frequently or child will lose interest. Not all supervisors will provide toys for you which can make your job much harder.

Great region, terrible company
Sep 9, 2021 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Digital data collection, stipend for continuing education, pre-COVID opportunities for team socials and other team building activities. I loved our office and our Senior VP.
Cons
Overall Cons: The parent company, Learn It Systems, is TERRIBLE. I knew they were terrible when I worked with AST, but I was willing to overlook it for a time because I loved the team I worked with. But, since I left the company, there is so much coming out of the woodwork that truly highlights how terrible this company is. They are very much a FOR PROFIT company, and they let you know it. Their billable hours and number of clients are more important to them then the staff running their regions. They did not participate in many of the CARES Act benefits that would have safeguarded their employees during this pandemic. They did not put reasonable safety policies in place to protect their staff against the COVID-19 virus, even though the staff were working in homes. They put unreasonable expectations on their staff and then seem confused when people decide to leave. The benefits they offer are very minimalvery minimalvery minimal and VERY expensive. The HR department is absolutely useless, even when it comes down to the most basic things. Region cons: Very large caseloads, excessive travel between clients, expectation to be working in the field until 7-8 pm. Very high turnover - which is par for the course for ABA jobs, but this turnover leaves the remaining employees strained beyond their capabilities and burnt out. They preach work-life balance but they don't practice it.
Continue readingThank you for your feedback. You are correct that LEARN is a large agency which has both pros and cons. The size of the company did limit the federal support that was available during the pandemic. However, on a positive note, LEARN is one of the few ABA agencies that was able to survive the pandemic with minimal furloughs of clinical staff. LEARN also created several support programs for it’s employees during this time, although these were not federally subsidized. I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t feel that your suggestions were heard. LEARN actually does try to implement many suggestions from employees. In response to some concerns raised regarding work/life balance, all staff do accrue PTO, and a healthy work life balance is encouraged through both taking time off and a variety of company led initiatives to bring balance into each work day. For example, all employees have access to a range of virtual exercise classes, meditations, and leisure courses. As our communities reopen, we are beginning to hold more in person socials and events. I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed your region and your team. Our culture really is what makes us special.

Salary Great supervisors Good co workers
Cons
Do not prioritize employees at all of it interfered with what the clinic needs. They severed all pay and benefits during the shut down for COVID-19. Basically told us to go screw ourselves until this blows over. Makes you feel very disposable and a horrible Showing of the true colors of This company.

Vice President, Clinical Services
We as an organization are taking the COVID-19 outbreak very seriously and our top priorities are the health and safety of our staff and families. Our centers are still open and we are offering home based services, while implementing the strictest safety precautions. We have hours available if you would like to work, or you have the option of going on leave if you do not want to work in the interest of your health. Your benefits are frozen as is, so you will not lose your benefits. We want to get through this difficult time as best as possible with the least amount of impact to our staff. As always, please reach out to your Clinical Director for questions specific to your situation. We appreciate your hard work and dedication to our clients.

I am very happy to know you found our work fulfilling and appreciated the management and growth opportunities. I think you point out an important facet of the BI job; working with children with autism can be stressful and difficult. But on the flip side, it can be tremendously rewarding as you pointed out! We do everything we can to support our staff in challenging situations including comprehensive training (including Safety Care for Crisis Prevention) and field support from experienced supervisors. We are also continuously working to provide consistency for our staff as well opportunities to be engaged with their co-workers. We will keep working on this. Thank you for the feedback. - Justin
