Pros

Cons
Getting attached to a client and family and their schedule changes
Continue readingThank you for the 5 star review! I am thrilled to hear that you appreciate AST’s training as well as our “awesome” and supportive staff. I agree. Creating strong connections with our amazing clients and their families can be hard on the BI and the family when schedules change. We strive to keep consistent whenever possible, but change is inevitable. Thanks for your sensitivity to that. Keep up the great work! - Justin

I love my job!
Apr 22, 2014 - Pogram Supervisor in Pleasanton, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Supportive and knowledgeable support built in to the company's structure. I have worked at AST as an intervention and currently as a supervisor. As an interventionist I received support when working in uncomfortable situations with families. My supervisor truly made me feel she 'had my back.' In addition, I felt my supervisors were invested in my growth and professional development. They provided opportunities to learn advance behavior strategies and analysis. My supervisors were always open to questions and provided support in any way possible. After completing a masters program and passing the BCBA exam, I was promoted to supervisor. As a supervisor my clinical director has taught me how to teach others and manage both staff and familiesctor has taught me how to teach others and manage both staff and familiesctor has taught me how to teach others and manage both staff and families. Being a supervisor has allowed me to have a more flexible schedule. I feel I have a good work/life balance and have been compensated with a competitive salary. I have enjoyed all my different jobs at AST and have seen many changes occur throughout the company. I feel AST is invested in their staff and work hard to make it great work experience.
Cons
I believe cons with AST are consistent with industry standards. This would include inconsistent hours, long work days and drive times. However, being a in-home service provider, these concerns are common. I feel AST has been active in listening to interventionist concerns and have tried to rectify these concerns to the best of their ability. An additional concern would be limited growth without educational experience. I have seen some strong interventionist, with lots of experience, leave due to lack of advancement. However, with the appropriate educational experience, growth is possible.

Pros
AST is a great company to work for with multiple locations in multiple states that is experiencing tremendous growth. Executives with the company are very involved company are very involved company are very involved in the day to day operations and AST has the absolute best clinical staff serving the Autism community.
Cons
Focus is mostly on clinical services which can sometimes lead support/administrative staff to feel left out of events and communications that affect the entire company.

A bit of good, a bit of bad
May 11, 2016 - Advanced Behavior Interventionist in Los Angeles, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pros: Friendly atmosphere, supportive supervisors, good schedulers. There is on going training for all staff and BCBA supervision for those who need it. They have good health benefits and standard PTO accrual.
Cons
Cons: When I was leaving there seemed to be big corporate changes happening (as in a possible buy out of AST by their new partner). Lower staff were not informed of the changes and changes in management. Also, clinical directors were not always supportive of respecting earned PTO or requested changes in schedules.

Be okay with bureaucracy
Jan 27, 2021 - Training Technician in Orange, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-Hours are consistent -Work materials needed for role are provided -Available to get COVID vaccine -Twice a year performance raises (except they only hedge inflation) -The families make it all worth it in the end. -Easy to communicate with supervisors. -Can cover other cases and clients in order to increase hours. -Drive time and mileage paid. -Health insurance offered for employees. -401k match. -Have the ability to move up to full time as a technician.
Cons
-BURN. OUT. IS. REAL. (Management/Supervisors don't care about feeling overwhelmed because they need *billable hours* - billable hours get supervisors bonuses but not technicians at all) -Does not promote an environment that allows staff to be themselves at work. This is done by supervisors openly talking down about their staff in the office with other supervisors where anyone can hear, including a technician working in a cubicle. This is also done by favoritism and seniority affecting the feedback being given to staff members. One staff can use curse words at work that has been there for 10 years but another staff member who has been there for 2 years can't use words such as 'awesome.' -Concerns from lower level staff members related to the culture at the company and the feeling of inclusiveness is pushed aside in order to keep the system at the company the same with improvement for staff well being at every level.

Vice President, Clinical Services
I agree, burn out is a real challenge in this field. Have you spoken with your Clinical Director about your concerns with the environment in your region? We do take our culture very seriously and I'm sure they would like to work with you on this. Our new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee is also addressing some concerns like these. I'm glad to hear that you find our supervisors easy to talk to and I agree that the families make it all worth it!
