A hard job
May 15, 2015 - Behavioral Interventionist in Santa Ana, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-You learn a lot about about the field of Autism. -Can also learn a lot about ABA and behavior in general. IF you have a supportive Supervisor you learn even more. -Can be very challenged, constantly changing, quick paced.
Cons
-Inconsistent hours due to all the cancellations. Do not get paid consistently. -Cancellation pay is minimum wage. -No benefits of any kind until you work for 3 months straight with a minimum of 25 hours a week. This is hard to do because of all the cancellations. You may not get benefits til 6 months or more later! -Not very much training given to people new to the field. I felt very unsupported in the beginning, and not confident in what I was doing. I did not know how to handle many situations or do any parent education. -LOTS of driving. -Can be isolating, you are working in the homes and essentially have NO co-workers. -The job itself is very challenging, many high stress situations, children with a lot of behavior who will scream, bite, hit etc.. -Can be very exhausting, having to bring in NEW toys and activities frequently or child will lose interest. Not all supervisors will provide toys for you which can make your job much harder.

I love my job!
Apr 22, 2014 - Pogram Supervisor in Pleasanton, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Supportive and knowledgeable support built in to the company's structure. I have worked at AST as an intervention and currently as a supervisor. As an interventionist I received support when working in uncomfortable situations with families. My supervisor truly made me feel she 'had my back.' In addition, I felt my supervisors were invested in my growth and professional development. They provided opportunities to learn advance behavior strategies and analysis. My supervisors were always open to questions and provided support in any way possible. After completing a masters program and passing the BCBA exam, I was promoted to supervisor. As a supervisor my clinical director has taught me how to teach others and manage both staff and families. Being a supervisor has allowed me to have a more flexible schedule. I feel I have a good work/life balance and have been compensated with a competitive salary. I have enjoyed all my different jobs at AST and have seen many changes occur throughout the company. I feel AST is invested in their staff and work hard to make it great work experience.
Cons
I believe cons with AST are consistent with industry standards. This would include inconsistent hours, long work days and drive times. However, being a in-home service provider, these concerns are common. I feel AST has been active in listening to interventionist concerns and have tried to rectify these concerns to the best of their ability. An additional concern would be limited growth without educational experience. I have seen some strong interventionist, with lots of experience, leave due to lack of advancement. However, with the appropriate educational experience, growth is possible.

Pros
The supervisors are very Knowledgeable and the company is very accommodating to the schedule that you available to work.
Cons
The longer you are there it seems like they expect so much more from you for no raise. I didn't receive a raise for the last few years I was there.

Pros
My supervisor was very kind and easy to work with.
Cons
Little possibility to meet new people.
Very glad to hear you had a positive experience with your supervisor. Sorry you didn’t get enough exposure to working with others. In addition to the folks you meet in your initial hiring class, we hold quarterly team meetings to help facilitate relationship building within our regions. It's definitely something we are continuously trying to improve, so thanks for the feedback. - Justin

Pros
clients, focus on empirical practices, seemingly good salary (although when everything is accounted for, salaried employees don't make very much when you calculate how many hours they work. hourly employees frequently have to work the whole day but aren't payed for the whole time because there are gaps in their schedules)
Cons
supervisors are spread too thin (they have 12 hour days) and therapists aren't supported. the end result is that clients don't get the services they need.

Great staff, A job not for the faint of heart
Feb 6, 2021 - Behavior Technician in Slidell, LARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The pay is good and the staff are amazing. The supervisors are open and honest with their employees. Everyone is willing to help if you need it.
Cons
The clients can be very challenging. The way their pay system works is a bit of a con because you don't get paid if your client is out for some reason.

Vice President, Clinical Services
We're glad to hear that you've found our supervisors to be supportive and honest. We work hard to create a culture where people feel comfortable asking for help and know that they are valued. I agree our clients can be challenging, but it is definitely rewarding to see their progress! We do offer same day cancellation pay, and you are always encouraged to schedule makeups if a session is missed for some reason. We are glad you're part of our team!

Pros
I worked at AST in New Orleans for two years. Before joining AST, I had no knowledge of ABA therapy. AST provided me with great training and supervision and I am now studying to become a BCBA. The atmosphere at AST New Orleans is welcoming and supportive. The supervisors were always available when I had questions and were willing to give me experience hours I need for my BCBA certification. Everyone is easy to talk to and open to helping others. It was truly the best experience I have ever had working for any company.
Cons
schedules may vary with no options to alt on another case
Autism Spectrum Therapies Response
It makes me incredibly proud that you consider AST a great place to work. I agree that the NOLA team has done an incredible job of creating a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. Congratulations on your decision to pursue your BCBA – one of our goals as an organization is to expose as many people as possible to ABA in hopes that they will love it and pursue a career helping children with autism and other special needs!
