I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Hours are great, being able to work an earlier shift and not get caught on the typical Lansing rush hour.

    Cons

Shirt and ties all the time. Casual days would be nice, but currently not an option. Starting out on time sheets.

    Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance for less than a year

    Pros

The salary was decent, the benefits were tolerable, and I only had to work 7.5 hours a day.

    Cons

There wasn't always work to do. It seemed that performance was not that important to managers; as a result, many bad to mediocre developers were able to stay around and "succeed". This led many of the good developers to leave for other jobs which in turn furthered the decline.

    Advice to Management

Reward true excellence and raise the standards. Treat the developers like developers and not like insurance salesmen.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance

    Pros

Auto Owners is a fortune 500 insurance company. It's full of nice people who are usually willing to help. The benefits are great and the pay is alright. They let their developers listen to headphones while they work. Some positions let you program entirely in Java. You get an hour for lunch and the work day is only 7.5 hours.

    Cons

Dress is business casual with tie required. They really don't joke around about this. If you're late, you have to sign in so they can keep a record of your tardiness. Internet and emails are filtered and computers are actively monitored. As other reviews have mentioned, their technology really is stuck in the '60s. A good portion of the staff learned to program at Auto Owners, and are completely unfamiliar with concepts...

    Advice to Management

Go work at a software company for a year or two, then come back and bring Auto Owners up to speed.
