I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Fantastic atmosphere. Pay is above average, when taking into account the profit sharing bonus plus salary. Very flexible/understanding about life changes, relocating etc.

    Cons

Slower than average with regards to technological advancement. There is not a clear path for progression.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! Make a clear path for progression (required designations, education, experience, etc).

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Solid Benefits Package - Health Insurance is good, the 401K match is decent - 4% if you put in 5% of your salary. They have a pension plan, and while it isn't very much, it's decent to supplement your retirement income. If you put your time in with the company, every year they usually give a Christmas Bonus that increases 1% every year until it maxes out at 10% of your salary. In addition, depending on how the company...

    Cons

The reason they have never laid anyone off, is because they run a skeleton crew. You do the work of 2 people. Plain and simple. They work you to death, and pay you about 10% less than everyone else. Granted, if they have a good year, bonuses can certainly make up for that. However, planning your finances around "what if" money isn't exactly putting you in a strong financial position. The atmosphere is old fashioned,...

    Advice to Management

Pay good employees a little more to keep them, instead of making them do the work of two people. You are going to make your employees do the work of two people anyway, at least pay them better.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Super chill and individualistic work environment. Worked on my own for the most part and was out of the office for half of the day out on claims.

    Cons

Very conservative company (button up and tie type of place). Had to be in the office even when we didn't have any work to do. Chances of moving up was miniscule.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Decent benefits, will get you in the door to claims because they hire with no experience, nice home office in Michigan

    Cons

Unless you are a single male with no kids and a willingness to move anywhere, don't look to get promoted. Lower paying company for claims.

    Advice to Management

Develop a tier system for your branch auto reps. Someone there for 10 years shouldn't have the same title as a new hire. It's insulting. There should be somewhere for someone to go within the company even if they can't relocate; especially long time good employees.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Benefits are good. Vacation and personal leave is good if you can get approval to take it.

    Cons

Expectations are too high with the volume of claims. There is no consideration given for amount of claims or the severity of those claims.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees. You need more specialization.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Would be many if the manager that hired me answered my questions honestly - it’s there number one core value and he violates it daily!!!

    Cons

Stuffy Non Diverse Company where all they care about is if your at your desk on time and not the quality of work.

    Advice to Management

Hire a team that tells future employees the truth about the culture and doesn’t lie just to fill quotas.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Flexibility, generous bonus and benefit structure, and freedom from micromanagement

    Cons

High workload requires occasionally working over 40 hours. Also, work piles up when you are gone so long vacations are generally impossible.

    Advice to Management

Do all you can to retain top talent - salaries should be negotiable.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Bonus was nice. Insurance package was ok.

    Cons

Local and state leadership was pretty poor. Condescending. People overseeing claims that did not understand claims. They were afraid to provide direction.

    Advice to Management

Maybe take a closer look at management in all offices in the state, except Eau Claire.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Pension, 37.5 hour work week, Christmas bonus, profit sharing. Some decent coworkers. Centrally located. Workload was reasonable for a long time, until they stopped staffing the office properly.

    Cons

Promote people who simply are willing to move, NOT on their experience, knowledge or credentials. Good ole boys club. Managers are awkward, and are there just to fulfill a brief title requirement as they move up in the company/fast track. Managers have a severe distrust of all employees, and treat them like criminals. Company is very thrifty/cheap in all aspects from corporate travel, to every day office products or expenses....
