I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Growing, stable company. Fortune 500, good reputation. Lots of friendly faces and awesome co-workers. Lots of opportunities to work in different parts of the country.

    Cons

Salary is not competitive. We are constantly told that our compensation is a 'package' which includes bonuses and benefits...every Fortune 500 company's compensation includes bonuses and commissions. Upper management is very slow to adapt and change.

Has the feel of a 'boys club'. Men are promoted to management positions from hourly staff positions while women have to climb their way up the corporate ladder one painstaking inch at a time. in the division I work in, the women are held to a higher standard for the same title.

In the division I work in, the interviewing process is really long. 3-6 months between submitting an application and getting a job offer.

    Advice to Management

Get with it. Make the salaries competitive. You're losing valuable people. The world is changing and you need to keep up.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Hours are great, being able to work an earlier shift and not get caught on the typical Lansing rush hour.

    Cons

Shirt and ties all the time. Casual days would be nice, but currently not an option. Starting out on time sheets.

    Pros

All the employees were held at a high, professional standard to provide great customer service and to get work done promptly. The training I received allowed me to learn so much about insurance.

    Cons

The job I held was temporary

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work!

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great family company who really cares about its employees. Christmas bonuses every year and incentive bonuses if the company does well.

    Cons

Not current on technology, always a step behind. There is no flexibility if people want to work from home or have telecommute jobs.

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees to do a good job. Don't promote people just because they have been there a long time. Give if to the new person if they DESERVE it.

    I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time

    Pros

The people are great. Stable company with no worries about down sizing. All management have been promoted from within. Private company with pension plan is pretty rare these days.

    Cons

40-30% lower base pay than same job title in other insurance companies in the area. Leadership positions don't come with much in the way of pay increase = no real incentive to get promoted. Annual raise equals inflation if good. If bad, a little less than inflation = not much difference in a good review vs bad review. Management has sole control over internal transfers. Employees have no idea what jobs are available, nor their pay.

    Advice to Management

Start paying people. You've lost some good people to competitors because the disparity in pay has gotten to a point where pension and bonuses can't be used as justification.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly environment, great co-workers, stable company with decent health benefits, profit sharing, generous Christmas Bonus, 401k matching, and pension.

    Cons

Required business professional attire, no options to telecommute. Generally below average salary. Seem to be lacking in consistency for advancement. Too many layers in management.

    Advice to Management

Consistently reward associates who perform above expectations. Base titles on experience and performance a d not on company longevity.
