I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This is a great company to begin working in insurance. Great benefits and bonuses. Management gets it. Management cares about employees.

    Cons

Heavy workload. Keeps you busy non stop. Continuously working to try to keep up with workload. Some employees catch up on work at home after hours.

    Advice to Management

Hire more associates to keep up with the required workload. Overall a great company, but you could do more for your associates.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Flexible start time

    Yearly bonuses can be good

You will never get fired and can do very little work and stay employed

Good way to break into the industry and get trained before moving on

    Cons

    Turnover is out of control

Management doesn't even try to retain top talent

Annual pay raise doesn't cover inflation. You will be confined to recieving 2% every year, regardless of your work.

You will be babysat and the office environment feels like an elementary school

They just stopped requiring office workers (who never meet with clients) to stop wearing ties. It's a conservative culture to say the least

Prudence is something they stress as a company. Cheap is a better word for it

    Advice to Management

Trust your employees to do their job instead of micromanaging. In what reality is the time you get into the office more important than quality of work?

When an employee leaves be sure to clean out their desk. Often times associates will find a leaving employees annual review which shows their pay raises over time. This is bad for morale as the pay grade is frankly depressing. Newer associates should not have to see how little the company values tenure.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits including pension, 401K 4% match, 5K+ in benefits dollars to use for health insurance, FSA or HSA. Paid holidays off, 2 wks + of vacation and PTO. Good work-life balance, 37.5hr work week. Salary starts at $47,500 and increases to $49,000 after 6 mths.

    Cons

No real cons, it's a good place to work, trust me. Insurance is a boring topic, but hey, that's life.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the good work.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great job security, people rarely ever are fired or let go. Large bonuses if the company has a good year. The work is not too challenging. Friendly coworkers.

    Cons

Salary is around 10% lower than the industry average. The PTO is also very low compared to other companies. Very outdated operating/computer programs. Poor communication between the underwriting side and the claim handling side. Home office management is very slow to change anything at the branch level.

    Advice to Management

Pay the employees what they are worth. Talented employees are going to consistently leave for the competition until salaries match the industry.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Great bonuses especially the longer you are with the company
    - Great Benefit Package
    - Workload is manageable
    - Ability to relocate
    - Awesome co-workers
    - Flex hours

    Cons

    - Management can truly make or break a region. I have worked in many areas within the company with a lot of great managers along the way. However, the most recent position I'm in has unfortunately given me a negative perspective on this company. When there is one bad apple that is causing people to quit left and right, this should be a wake up call to actually do something about it instead of just saying you will. Start listening to your associates!!! Drain the swamp, get rid of the toxic people, put in a new manager that is a LEADER! A leader is someone who cares about their associates and encourages growth, not breaks them down, talks behind their back, and lies to them.
    - Lower Pay compared to the industry

    Advice to Management

It starts from the top y'all. When you actually tell your associates that change is coming and nothing happens, you will continue to lose quality, sustainable associates. The day change is actually made, they will start sticking around.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy, low stress, traditional, stable. Easy to work for auto owners especially if you like to go to work and go home. No take home necessary.

    Cons

Auto-Owners is very traditional and can be slow to adapt to change. They do not fire people very often and after you have been there for a little while people begin to slow down efficiency.

    Advice to Management

Be more clear and direct to address problems. Address them with individuals instead of groups. People don't always realize they are doing things if you don't address them directly.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly people, easy work, only promote from within.

    Cons

Overly formal and bent on rules that doesn't allow for any growth or creativity. If they were to shoot Office Space 2 this place would be the set.

    Advice to Management

Allow casual fridays or some more relaxed dress code, cut your cube walls in half, liven up your office space, and create a more inviting environment. You're never goona get good going talent to stay with your current office culture.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good values and connection with senior officers. If you have the right manager, they will do anything they can to help advance your career.

    Cons

They do not seem to want to change with the times. While other companies are offering higher salaries, true flex time, and work from home options when warranted AO does not want to budge from the office setting. Not always room for advancement and it's the luck of the draw if you'll get a manager that fights for your career or just sits back and waits for you to leave because you're no longer challenged. As a result there's high turnover and does t appear anything is going to change.

    Advice to Management

Realize what the competition is offering. You pride yourself on never laying anyone off, but you also chase good employees away to peruse challenging careers elsewhere. I've heard the joke too many times that AO is just where you go to spend 3 years to get trained and then leave to start your career.
