I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pension, 401k matching, health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, and a prepaid medical expense card are fantastic incentives. Internal promotions are not hard to come by. Most positions are filled internally. Profit sharing is usually a significant amount.

    Cons

Base salary is well below national average and well below average for my city. Branch level management is inexperienced and struggles with favoritism/bias. Turnover at my branch is high.

    Advice to Management

When employees show frustration with well below average base salaries, do not tell them to go somewhere else if they want to be paid more. It makes them feel very under valued.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good values and connection with senior officers. If you have the right manager, they will do anything they can to help advance your career.

    Cons

They do not seem to want to change with the times. While other companies are offering higher salaries, true flex time, and work from home options when warranted AO does not want to budge from the office setting. Not always room for advancement and it's the luck of the draw if you'll get a manager that fights for your career or just sits back and waits for you to leave because you're no longer challenged. As a result there's high turnover and does t appear anything is going to change.

    Advice to Management

Realize what the competition is offering. You pride yourself on never laying anyone off, but you also chase good employees away to peruse challenging careers elsewhere. I've heard the joke too many times that AO is just where you go to spend 3 years to get trained and then leave to start your career.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very nice people who generally seem to be interested and caring towards the employees. Had been great to work there so far.

    Cons

They do not have any pay advantages for performance. You will get a very positive performance review, then get the same raise as someone that only meets minimum requirements.

    Advice to Management

For Home Office: allow each branch to allocate the amount of raises without needing approval from individuals from home office that don't seem to understand the local economy and competition.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good profit sharing plan; somewhat flexible work schedule; 37.5-hour work week; company-paid educational opportunities; company focuses on hiring from within versus externally

    Cons

Lower-than-industry-average pay; no internal positing of job opportunities (so it's important to discuss your interests with your supervisor); management often has less industry education than subordinates; company rewards longevity more than education, abilities or talents

    Advice to Management

Set an example for your employees and work on furthering your own industry knowledge through the company-paid educational opportunities. Your underwriters are the ones dealing with issues on a day-to-day basis, they understand what is becoming a problem and what isn't, so go to bat for them when they say there's an issue and the home office underwriters say there isn't.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice group of people to work with. 37.5 hour work week. Co-workers are understanding and are usually very easy to work with.

    Cons

Management promotions here are not based on merit or expertise, it is a popularity contest. Managers are not concerned about the employees and are only concerned with continuing the status quo. This company has no plan in place to retain millennials, and is actually driving them away-the old boys club style and lack of employee moral will contribute to this company's downfall unless they adapt to attract and retain young people, if you are a young person, look for work elsewhere as it is unlikely your values and work style will fit the value of this company.

Low employee morale- ties are required everyday and the company is so cheap that essential things like the office coffee machine will break and not be replaced.

Finally-Pay is below industry average, not a lot of room for financial or professional growth is allowed here unless you are heavily favored by management or know the right people.

    Advice to Management

Find a way to adapt to the aging workforce and find a way to attract young people. They are the future of your workforce and are essential to perpetuation. Loosen up a little bit! The workplace should be a fun environment where people are able to express themselves and think outside the box while still adhering to productivity goals. Increase pay to ensure you are attracting the best talent.
