I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    -Strict 37.5 hour work week

    Cons

-Massive amounts of technical debt spread through IT -Very uncompensated for the development positions -Promotions on NOT merit based at all but instead based on how much your manager likes you -Upper management cares very little about IT(seen as a cost center) and as such is not willing to provide them the necessary tools in many cases -Strict dress code

    Advice to Management

If you don't get up to pace with the times as the older generation stops buying insurance then AO will find itself obsolete.

    I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time

    Pros

When I started I thought the companies was wonderful. Great benefits, retirement, vacation time and sick time.

    Cons

My manager past away and they promoted within. This man tortured several employees for years. It was to the point they had to leave. Some left before the big bonus because he just made the employees feel worthless. Upper management knew what was going on and did nothing even after complaints.

    Advice to Management

Without employees you would not have a company.

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Christmas bonus, stable employment (have never had layoffs, even during the Great Depression)

    Cons

It's easy to stagnate if you don't catch the eye of upper management. Very strict on some inconsequential things, but will tolerate flagrant abuses of those same rules by company favorites.

    Advice to Management

Start posting internal job openings. Stop favoring baby boomer culture when they'll all be retiring soon.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time

    Pros

You can be horrible at your job and still keep it. Profit sharing...not guaranteed though. Brainless work. 37.5 hour week, but paid for 40.

    Cons

Zero accountability. Core values not followed. Terrible morale at specific branch location. Human Resources and Management do not care. Wrong people put in management roles. 20% below average in salary, and forget negotiating. Branch offices placed in dump towns, so it's difficult to recruit top talent. Take too long to promote and move real talent, which causes good people to leave. Just when I think I saw it...

    Pros

Bonuses & job security, some really great people

    Cons

Upper management does not trust associates to do their jobs and constantly micromanages Innovators are rewarding with watching the people who always say "Yes" get promoted

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance

    Pros

alternate schedule, Christmas bonus and referral of future employees.

    Cons

if you are liked by upper management you will move up quickly in the company. If you voice your opinion and it is not well received then you will not go anywhere. They are way behind the times when it comes to salary and changing with the business times

    Advice to Management

look at what other insurance companies are doing. It is a good stepping stone for people but everyone is underpaid.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Business leadership is very good. Conservative, steady and stable approach to growth. In many areas there are good opportunities to grow.

    Cons

Silos within business and technology degrade the company productivity and morale. Much of the young upper management solidify these silos and exclude others with more knowledge and experience.

    Advice to Management

GO back to what got us where we were in the first place. Make sure rising management stars care about the core values and the people around them.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Growing, stable company. Fortune 500, good reputation. Lots of friendly faces and awesome co-workers. Lots of opportunities to work in different parts of the country.

    Cons

Salary is not competitive. We are constantly told that our compensation is a 'package' which includes bonuses and benefits...every Fortune 500 company's compensation includes bonuses and commissions. Upper management is very slow to adapt and change. Has the feel of a 'boys club'. Men are promoted to management positions from hourly staff positions while women have to climb...

    Advice to Management

Get with it. Make the salaries competitive. You're losing valuable people. The world is changing and you need to keep up.

I have been working at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Stable, pension, profit sharing, christmas bonus, opportunities for advancement, flex time, they do NOT fire anybody.

    Cons

Reluctant to change with the times. Extremely dull work environment. Complacent management and employees. Management does not hold associates accountable, which leads to resentment. Salaries a bit low. Bonus program structure has nothing to due with performance, but years of experience. Promote individuals that have no clue how to lead people. Upper management being friends...

I worked at Auto-Owners Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stable company: layoffs are virtually unheard of and I've seen many allowances given to improve a poor performance. Decent sliding benefits based on years of service.

    Cons

Overwhelmingly understaffed at almost every branch level. Upper management has taken massive bonuses while brow beating mid level mgmt with micromanagement and audit twisting. 60+ hours is the norm. Forced attrition

    Advice to Management

Beefing up the small H.O audit team to nitpik the already severely malnourished branch staffing is not the answer to W.O.W service. You need ground troops to provide the service your employees truly want to give. Stop belittling them and help them
