I worked at AutoZone part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A professional workplace that allows for growth; hard work is key. Your hard work is seen and decent raises are given. Overall, it is a great place to work at.

    Cons

You have to be a fast learner. There are many things one has to learn; car parts. In addition to selling and handling customers one also has install batteries, windshield wipers, light bulbs, etc.

I have been working at AutoZone full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good if you know something about working on cars and like helping people. Shelving heavy auto parts and carrying batteries is excellent exercise. Excellent discount on parts.

    Cons

There aren't any chairs. Hands on training is minimal. There's long lulls followed by everyone and their brother coming through the door with their other brother calling on the phone. Pay isn't great, hours are long, with some stores open 24 hours a day. You may have to close one day and open before dawn the next. Corporate culture seems rooted in mid 80s Japanese style (for instance, there's a cheer and you spell AutoZone "Y-M-C-A" style but after your intro session you'll never do this unless you get into mid-level management) but this only affects stores in the push to sell, sell, sell, with guilt trips if you seem to underperform. The POS/computer system is terrible, a kludge of different software dating back to terminal days. There is a shortage of manager level employees because no one wants the job.

    Advice to Management

Streamline/modernize the computer system, clean up the warranty and rewards program data, Put in stools for those working cashier. Improve security in the stores. Analyze if it's really worth it to be open on holidays or if closing early might not be a good idea. We have to put in headlight bulbs but aren't really trained in how to do that, frequently leading to unhappy customers.

    Pros

You gain technical knowledge on cars.

    Cons

AutoZone over works you and underpays the hell out of you.

    Advice to Management

    Here from employees sometimes

    Pros

Flexible scheduling in 24 hour store. My store manager is very understanding especially when kids are involved. Very corporate meaning many opportunities to move up if you are willing to do the work. Multiple discounts through other companies including on vehicles and appliances.

    Cons

Take promises made with a grain of salt as far as quick promotion goes. You will probably sweat. You must know how to be political in the way you handled people. If you can't do that then look elsewhere. Don't take me wrong I don't mind my job. Just don't want people to think it's a walk in the park or that it is hell.

    Advice to Management

Follow through with what comes out of your mouth. Some upper management needs to relearn what it is actually like to be considered like man on the totem pole.

    Pros

    - Nice learning about cars and dealing with people. Also, the 10% employee discount was nice.
    - Fair pay (starting)
    - Some really cool people to work with.

    Cons

    - Always some sort of drama from management.
    - .25 cent raises (insanity)
    - Inflexible hours. They will have you closing one night, then coming back at 7 to open the next morning.

    Advice to Management

Better pay. No one can live on $8/hr. Implement a profit sharing model for team members. Even if its just $150 a quarter, its still nice.

I have been working at AutoZone full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work if you like cars, as most employees will be car guys or gals. The pay isn't too bad for the work being done. Scheduling is done around school and other things. becoming a manger is not too hard to achieve. Workplace can be fun if not working with a horrible crew.

    Cons

Customers WILL and I repeat WILL expect you to know every single thing possible about their make and model. And if you don't then you are automatically labeled as incompetent. DM's expect stupid NUMBERS to be reached weekly and if not done then you lose hours and get yelled at or written up. Autozone lets those certain lazy employees get away with everything, which the negative is that you will be working extra hard to make up for others sucking at their job.

    Advice to Management

Stop letting lazy, useless, ignorant employees get away with everything. Put your foot down and notice the employee that is doing very well and not the one that kisses your hiney.
