I have been working at Autodesk full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Progressive and employee-friendly. Its hard to make a big ship change direction, but Autodesk's senior management does a good job at keeping Autodesk relevant.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Autodesk full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great health plan and other fringe benefits in the US. Almost like an internet company.
    - Flexible work schedules and locations (working from home and remotely is common practice)
    - Reasonable work hours

    Cons

    - No advancement opportunities
    - Very political within the Media and Entertainment division
    - Hubris of a large company
    - Lack of desire or inability to deal with horrible people in positions of power

    Advice to Management

Restructuring should include reconsideration of the senior leadership teams that have been in place for decades.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Autodesk as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

People and products are interesting and world class. There is no shortage of opportunity to change the world there.

    Cons

The company is very hard to move. There is a strange dichotomy between risk aversion in the parts of the business that make all the money (CAD Software) and complete lack of accountability in the science project side of the house.

    Advice to Management

Free the people in the core business to take risks and find a way to compensate them, otherwise the best and the brightest will stop working on the important things and do TED talks instead.

Better intern projects. Bring in latest technologies.

I worked at Autodesk as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Worked on a real project that will be deployed in a few months! Great team. Javascript, Angular, Node.

    Cons

Work space has cubicles where I am working. I would hope for a more open floorplan. Lake Oswego instead of Downtown Portland. No option to take the Max to work.

    Advice to Management

Open floor plan for developers! This would encourage communication and help the trust among employees (as well as having the anti-social and employees who don't like anyone to leave). Also, Lake Oswego Office, please move to downtown portland! So many tech companies and

I have been working at Autodesk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay. Good benefits. Some interesting projects. Nice offices in San Francisco.

    Cons

CIO and most senior leaders in EIS are empty suits. They don't understand current technologies and spend all day playing politics. They throw their people under the bus when they get in trouble.

For example my apps team had a great leader who really changed things around here. He was technical and helped us to modernize everything from bringing in agile development to changing the languages and databases. He was the only member of CIO staff who had any real diversity on his leadership team. But the CIO decided to fire him because it was becoming obvious he was so much a better stronger leader. I actually asked the CIO what happened and got a political BS answer. Now we're going backwards at light speed and the CIO spends all day telling little stories and slogans and throwing people under the bus.

    Advice to Management

    Get a new CIO.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Autodesk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work-life balance is excellent, very flexible office culture - people are allowed to work from home when needed, during my tenure there I've not experienced undue pressure and crunch time (other than self-inflicted). Benefits are on par with industry standards

    Cons

The company is lagging behind in technology and development methods, there is a lot of inertia in switching to shorter development cycles and applying feedback loops. Due to unusual long tenure for some senior managers and executives they are sometimes seem disconnected from the reality outside of the company and ignore obvious industry trends

    Advice to Management

    Reality check is needed

I have been working at Autodesk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits and time-off policies, with a sabbatical (6-week) every 4 years
    - Work-life balance in most of the groups, although it greatly depends
    - Lot of smart people

    Cons

    - Lots of politics between mid/upper management level (usually the case in large corporation)
    - Average compensations
    - Internal transfers never encouraged and next to impossible
    - Geographically distributed teams hinder development and cannot really run with Agile (regardless of how hard you try)
    - Working remotely a possibility, but discourage in a lot of groups

    Advice to Management

Take time to define goals with employees even in fast moving environments
