I worked at Autoliv (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was placed on the Highly Autonomous Vehicles team. Autoliv is working on some very interesting products in the field and I was able to use the test vehicles and see where the industry is moving which was very cool. Compensation was very competitive and the interview process was very reasonable.

    Cons

I did very little actual work at this position. I was told I would be doing software development on the vehicles. In the first week I was given the manuals for CAN and ADASIS and told to read and understand it. After making my way through those I was given a few trivial coding tasks to do then for the next 3 months I did virtually nothing. I spent the bulk of my time there driving test vehicles aimlessly around southeast Michigan gathering data to hopefully expose bugs. While I understand that this is necessary this was all I did and it felt like a waste of my time and abilities. As fun as it may sound to drive cars all day and get paid it gets old pretty quick.

    Advice to Management

Take better advantage of the interns you hire. It seemed like there was a lack of communication amongst the department and I was hired but no one who could assign me work was aware I was there. The full time employees were always busy but whenever I asked if I could do anything I was just passed along to someone else to find me a task. I would have liked to help and get some real experience but everyone seemed too busy to take a break and find out what of their work I could handle. While I'm certainly not mad about the pay I did feel like a big wasted expense most of the time.

    Pros

They have good benefits and the holiday shut down is nice when you get almost two weeks off during Christmas.

    Cons

No corporate structure (atleast where I was). Managment starts to panic easily. The other engineers and managment were condescending and critical at times when it was unnecessary.

    Advice to Management

Take a deep breath and take some management 101 classes.

I worked at Autoliv as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Not very stressful environment
    -The managers are nice
    -Cafeteria on top floor
    -Profit sharing for employees

    Cons

    - Company wants to hire through temp agencies as contractors (no benefits), and keep you waiting for a perm position for a LONG time, even though the temp agency promises 6 months at the beginning.
    - Technology isn't evolving very fast
    - Salaries are not very high
    - Lots of meetings
    - A bit disorganized. People get pulled from project to project, always saying it's crisis mode, all hands on board. You never really get deep into your work.
