The Most Amazing Company
Nov 17, 2015 - Anonymous Employee in Durham, NCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The best thing about working at Automated Insights is the freedom and flexibility to be creative and a little whacky. Ai wants people who are smart and opinionated and don't just do things because thats how we have always done it. Our CEO is always pushing you to have bigger and better ideas/solutions (or "amazing" as he likes to call it) because average won't cut it here. Our no jerks policy is absolutely enforced and it makes it a pleasure to come to work everyday knowing that your coworkers support you. I have never laughed so much at a job before. The most exciting part about working at Ai is the ability to be in a role where I get to build things from the ground up. What other company do you know that allows you to be proactive versus reactive? If you are someone who loves a good challenge and hates walking in with a set "To Do" list everyday or isn't afraid of being given a problem you don't know the answer to - you will fit in here great.
Cons
We are still a growing company so our foundation for processes is still in the works. I think it is the one of the fun parts of Ai, but it can be chaotic but thats where our #stayagile value comes into play.

Cons
Senior management had little empathy for employees

Pros
Definitely the best place I've ever worked. It's a treat to be around people who enjoy coming into the office. It's also rare to work for people who genuinely want to make sure we are enjoying the job and have the tools we need to be successful. Great work-life balance and a group of employees who like to get things done while having a good time.
Cons
Probably not the best place for anyone who prefers a traditional work environment, needs a quiet space to focus, or needs to be micro-managed in order to be productive. People here like to have a good time at work, and the office can get a little loud at times. That said, between a strict 'leave me alone while I'm wearing headphones' rule, working from home once a week, and plenty of places to move around to office and work, I find there's still plenty of time and space to focus.

Best job I've ever had
Jan 21, 2016 - Data Scientist in Durham, NCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
First and foremost, the culture. We're surrounded by amazing, talented people with unique personalities that make work fun on a daily basis. Not a day goes by without laughter filling the office, and you'll regularly find large groups heading out to grab coffee or lunch together or taking a break from work to hit the ping pong table. Everyone is as friendly and welcoming as they are talented, making every day in the office a pleasure. This starts at the top, as the senior leadership truly exemplifies our core values. Another highlight is the work/life balance. Because of the emphasis on hiring quality employees that fit the culture, there is a sense of trust that offers everyone the flexibility to work in whatever manner they work best. It's been impressive to see the continued commitment to this balance even as we keep growing.
Cons
There aren't really any downsides to working here. It's an exciting, innovative company filled with great people. What's not to like? Automated Insights is easily the best company I've ever worked for.

It really is all about the culture. To me it's crazy that more companies don't invest in the culture. It's something the senior leaders greatly influence and it s a huge predictor of employee success and loyalty. It will always be a focus at Ai!

All the fun of a tech start-up without the political gamesmanship of the typical founding team.

This is the first place I've worked that actually lives by its work-life balance promise. A flexible schedule allows us all to work when we're most productive, and greatly reduces the stress of having to fit life around work. The CEO sets a great tone for our fun-loving team, and we all like each other. I laugh throughout my day, and prefer to be at work with the crew than working from home (which we're encouraged to do once a week). Our location is awesome - overlooking the Durham Bulls stadium. We have a kegerator. We have in-house ping-pong tournaments, darts, foosball, video games, even stuff for our little kids to play with when they visit. It's fun to be at work!
Cons
While we have great health insurance and perks like free lunch supplies, etc., we don't yet have an option for retirement planning. I believe this is coming soon, however, and it will be a welcome development.

We will be knocking off your one Con by the summer. We survey our employees every year on what new benefits they'd like to see us add. 401K has always been at the BOTTOM of the list until last year when it was at the TOP. As a result, we are working on adding it very soon.

Great Company with a Fantastic Culture That's Doing Groundbreaking Work
Jan 26, 2015 - Data Scientist in Durham, NCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The workplace culture is the best I've ever experienced, and work-life balance is prioritized at AI. Working hard is encouraged and rewarded at AI, but playing hard/having fun is also stressed. And, as long as you're getting your work done, there's nearly unlimited flexibility in terms of schedule. The work itself is also very interesting and rewarding, as the company is a trailblazer in an exciting and emerging space (natural language generation). The office location/environment (overlooking Durham Bulls Athletic Park in the American Tobacco Campus) is also awesome!
Cons
As with any startup, AI is still working out some of the logistical kinks in its project lifecycle. There's room for efficiency gains in this process by standardizing some of the steps that repeat from project-to-project. Must be a flexible self-starter who's able to juggle multiple (and sometimes rapidly-changing) tasks/projects.

Thank you! Having groundbreaking technology AND an awesome culture has always been the goal. Most companies only get one or the other. At Ai we are focused on having both!

Pros
Automated Insights has been voted "Best Place to Work" in the Triangle for many years and the reasons are clear. One of the most important traits is the company has clearly stated values and a vision for the future. The vision promotes a feeling of purpose in everything you do at Automated Insights. The work environment is very flexible and laid-back. You couldn't ask for a better work-life balance. I genuinely feel lucky to be a part of this company.
Cons
Being a startup comes with its advantages and a few disadvantages. The company is working on ironing out defined processes for its development/engineering.

One way we're going to try and reinforce our culture with newhires is a new on-boarding process that will allow new employees to get exposure to every major function in the company during their first week. It starts with me telling the story about the founding and evolution of the company!
