I worked at Autotrader full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work from home, benefits were strong. Fairly autonomous work environment. Well known company within the industry.

    Cons

Autotrader is no longer the market leader in 3rd party value and the services charged to top dealers is sometimes 10x what the market leader charges those same dealers. The new market leader has disrupted the 3rd party market to an extent that makes Autotrader almost irrelevant to both dealers and younger shoppers. The current status of Autotrader's value to dealers is a direct result of the poor vision and ever changing leadership at the top over the last 4-5 years. Parent company is focusing on other more lucrative higher margin/growth segments within the vast Cox Automotive portfolio.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the more lucrative and promising business units within Cox Automotive. Autotrader's best days and audience growth are behind them. It will be pointless to try and win back the audience that has clearly found a more useful site Cargurus. KBB is a stronger brand than Autotrader to the public but difficult to monetize. You may want to consider selling the Autotrader brand/unit as its a drain on the Cox Automotive bottom line. Especially considering Cox doesn't own the Autotrader brand/properties in Canada or in Europe which makes branding on a global level awkward if not impossible. Top competitors have no such struggle.

I worked at Autotrader full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Growth opportunities within Cox Automotive, large consumer audience

    Cons

Competition has gotten fierce and they didn't renew large partnerships with other websites that feed traffic. Instead they spent millions on traditional advertising to build brand awareness. Several employees that were being groomed for promotions got snuffed due to outside hires from other business units.

    Advice to Management

    NA

    I worked at Autotrader full-time

    Pros

Good benefits, flexible hours, overall Cox Automotive Corporate direction

    Cons

No team work, aggressive management, poor communication

    Advice to Management

Calm down some. The reason Autotrader has been slipping over the last few years has been the fact you just laid back and coasted. Things weren't working....so maybe...just maybe....you should do some things different. You know what the definition of insanity is right???

I have been working at Autotrader full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay is typically over market for position
Benefits are good especially the 401k with full 6% match
Mobile phone plan discounts are decent

    Cons

Teams are prescribed solutions without the ability to solve problems. Business doesn't appear know it's core customer and thus can't prove the value of the products they are trying to deliver.
They are not using data to drive decisions (think output over outcomes & impact).

Culture is one of fear where growth is discouraged within product for fear of impacting the culture.

    Advice to Management

Steve Jobs once said you don't hire smart people to tell them what to do; you hire smart people so they can tell you want to do. Shed your culture of fear of failure and fear of accountability and empower people to get the job done in the ways they see fit.

Have a real vision for people to serve and not just a company, team or single manager.

Stop hiding behind silos and get the people doing the actual work in the field so they can better understand the customers needs and solve for the problems and not the solutions with data (both qualitative and quantitative)
