I have been working at Autry Museum of the American West part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly atmosphere and great exhibits. Everyone really pulls together to help each other out in all departments with is nice and helpful.

    Cons

Working with the public can be tough and I think that sometimes it's easy to forget how much interaction the front line employees deal with.

    Advice to Management

To remember how hard front line staff work.

    Pros

Talented and creative colleagues. Interesting exhibitions, collections, and public events. Plenty of potential for the museum to continue to expand its audiences and take advantage of its Griffith Park location.

    Cons

While the current development team is strong, the museum has had some rough patches in recent years as it struggled to fundraise and communicate its identity/relevance as more than a "cowboy museum."

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Nice people to work with. Majority of the staff are passionate about their work.

    Cons

No advancement. Board and upper management balance the budget through constant staff lay offs.

    Advice to Management

Get your house in order so that you can become place that attracts the public and keeps staff.

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Health Care Benefits. Nice Co-Workers although every department is different. Good HR department.

    Cons

Moral gets kinda low overall. The Autry struggles with its identity as a museum and struggles to maintain popularity in competition with other LA museums. Sometimes the way work if performed feels outdated. Pay is kinda low compared with other opportunities.

    Advice to Management

    None

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Autry has the resources to remain an important museum in California. The man-power and skill level of its employees are of the highest quality for a museum of this size. Be a part of this institution for as long as possible.

    Cons

It can become an echo chamber for its leadership. The pay is not remarkable and the days can be long.

I have been working at Autry Museum of the American West full-time

    Pros

The staff there are friendly and some of the exhibits and programing can interesting. The organization is also located in Griffith Park, perfect for lunch time walks.

    Cons

The organization is for the most part disorganized and lacks forward thinking. The leadership lacks a deep understanding of the staff and their well being and can seem aloof.

    Advice to Management

They should start by compensating their staff accordingly and give them the resources they need to do their jobs. They should also commit to having a clear and concise strategic plan.

    4. I love the location and overall environment

    Cons

    1. Will need to catch up to the most updated marketing trend or technology

    Advice to Management

It would be great if there is something like career development path for employee.

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good location, really amazing smart people who are committed to the organization

    Cons

Management is really horrible. President is never on-site and the senior staff is completely out of touch with much of what is needed. Many of the members of senior staff need management training VERY badly. They talk about forward thinking and planning ahead, but this is a crisis based company where they do nothing but react to the latest issue. Pay cuts and lay offs are a regular occurrence.

    Advice to Management

Train your upper level senior staff members. They are heartless and have almost no skills in managing people. Really really awful.
