I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Health Care Benefits. Nice Co-Workers although every department is different. Good HR department.

    Cons

Moral gets kinda low overall. The Autry struggles with its identity as a museum and struggles to maintain popularity in competition with other LA museums. Sometimes the way work if performed feels outdated. Pay is kinda low compared with other opportunities.

    Advice to Management

    None

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Friendly and the staff interacts very well together.

    Cons

Not much room for advancement. They tend to balance the budget by having lay-offs.

    Advice to Management

Provide more staff development and training when you promote people into a management position.

    Pros

A free museum membership, gift store and restaurant discount to all employees. The on-site restaurant is superior.

    Cons

Low pay. No opportunity for advancement. No communication with upper level staff members. The Human Resources department is the worst ever! I am a seasoned employee with over 20 years of office and fundraising experience. The best they could pay me was $14.hr. After one year of busting my ass I received a 2% raise. Yes, folks that is .25/hour. The top level managers receive $150,000 - $250,000/year but my part-time job only paid 1/10th of that. Plus, no benefits. If they sent the FT staff home early for holidays they thought they were heros; but to the PT and Hourly staff that meant our paychecks were cut.

    Advice to Management

Consider ALL Employees when making decisions like raises, holiday office closings and bonuses. Just because someone is PT or Hourly does not mean they should be treated like a second class citizen. A 2% across the board salary increase means $3K or $5K annually to you; but only .25/hour to a PT or Hourly employee. Just because the economy sucks does not mean you can take advantage of your employees and give them low wages; and tell them they should be happy to have a job. This is why I left. This is why I saw employees dropping like flies when I worked there.

I worked at Autry Museum of the American West full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The Autry has the resources to remain an important museum in California. The man-power and skill level of its employees are of the highest quality for a museum of this size. Be a part of this institution for as long as possible.

    Cons

It can become an echo chamber for its leadership. The pay is not remarkable and the days can be long.

I have been working at Autry Museum of the American West full-time

    Pros

Great location, important collection, some incredible, hard-working coworkers.

    Cons

CEO works part time at best and is paid full time, but he hasn't raised any money worth bragging about. Other problems include no accountability, with some exempt status employees coming in late, leaving early, taking paid time off with nobody questioning them. very unfair that some work hard while others hardly work. Layoffs and pay cuts are typical.

    Advice to Management

I'd give advice to management but they'd never take it - get rid of the CEO and start over.

I have been working at Autry Museum of the American West full-time

    Pros

The staff there are friendly and some of the exhibits and programing can interesting. The organization is also located in Griffith Park, perfect for lunch time walks.

    Cons

The organization is for the most part disorganized and lacks forward thinking. The leadership lacks a deep understanding of the staff and their well being and can seem aloof.

    Advice to Management

They should start by compensating their staff accordingly and give them the resources they need to do their jobs. They should also commit to having a clear and concise strategic plan.

    2. Employees share the same value and contribute themselves to the Western Culture ( which is what this museum all about).
    3. Friendly colleagues
    4. I love the location and overall environment

    Cons

    1. Will need to catch up to the most updated marketing trend or technology

    Advice to Management

It would be great if there is something like career development path for employee.
