Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Managed by threats

    Pros

Amazing training and there is a lot of opportunity to learn and network.

    Cons

Lots of threats and lots of failed promises. Partying is promoted and managers are usually gone when you actually need something. The cult culture was not the best environment. Telling us we should bleed orange or get out.

    Pros

Co-workers were helpful and willing to get you up to speed. They also provided great training and information about the product once you start.

    Cons

Definitely a boy's club type of environment. Also, the commute was not great (though I think they have moved their offices to Downtown Seattle so this might have changed). You could also see that some people were favored over others and thus got more leads or better opportunities to advance.

    Cons

Not organized well. No professional supervising provided during initial training. Low salary and not good benefits.

    Awful company

    Pros

The pay is very good compared to other companies

    Cons

Lack of transparency, lack of trust, lack of flexibility. Micromanagement at its best and lack of support. No training and no help whatsoever. Career stagnation, no clear path. Disorganised company, constantly changing. Culture of bullying, everyone constantly building very bad relationships with clients since no one knows what they are doing.

    Revolving door of disposable contractors

    Pros

The training is comprehensive and thorough.

    Cons

Contractors are treated as disposable. They use contractors for cheap labor and then cancel the contracts when people start pushing for benefits or long term employment. Management out of touch, very little constructive feedback given, sink or swim environment. Did not have a single 1:1 meeting with any manager despite repeatedly requesting feedback and coaching.

Great Beginner Company for your Career

    Pros

Working at Avalara is great to start. You will learn alot about tax and how to manage a workload.

    Cons

Management is indecisive and divided on many issues. The work atmosphere is clicky and lacks opportunity for professional development with the tax cycle dominating your time without time for training on new concepts.
