I worked at Avalere Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredibly intelligent people at all levels of the organization. These guys have an international reach and the data assets to make a real difference.

Incredibly cool projects to work on.

Tons of thought leaders to learn from. People who have made a difference in the healthcare space.

    Cons

I think if you find yourself in a bubble of negativity it can be hard to feel a part of the organization. Dysfunction between silos in the organization can be a bit much. And are frankly out of place is an org this small.

I don’t care care how broken data assets are as long as we are a team dedicated to improving our company and are committed to moving forward with the support of our leadership. You gotta meet me halfway tho.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest enacting a mentor system. Each new employee would have a seasoned employee to describe the organizational culture as it exists. Who can check in on new employees.

Avalere and the work we do is stressful. Feeling heard and appreciated is half the battle for some of the less outgoing employees.

Dan, what you have done here to create an organization the continues to grow and adapt and to exist this log is nothing short of amazing. Proud to have worked for you.

I worked at Avalere Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the smartest people in healthcare and the Founder, Dan, is a visionary who build a wonderful brand. The office is in a great location, convenient to metro and all that DuPont and greater downtown DC area has to offer. Pretty broad client base, and good name recognition in the event you want to leave - and most people do after some time.

    Cons

There is a misleading spin that management is placing on the high attrition rate that the firm has seen in past years, and unfortunately has continued to see this year. Greater than 40% is not normal at a consulting firm and while most people that leave, do leave for great opportunities, it is also because the firm lacks a staffing model that helps people get up to speed on "the Avalere way" (specifically, those coming in at Senior Manager and above tend to struggle). Avalere is great for those who come on board as Associates and stay for a number of years. At that level, your billable rate is nothing, and you will be staffed on tons of projects. The significant attrition rate is due to many issues stemming from the quirky culture, weak infrastructure, staffing model, and poor communication skills from many of the senior leaders (VPs in particular) who have been at the firm for a long time and are just used to the way it is. It doesn't help that many on the leadership team especially in the reimbursement practice are remote and don't really have a presence in the office developing junior staff.

    Advice to Management

Avalere has a new GM. My advice to him is to clean house of the legacy VPs who embrace the old culture and aren't willing to change with the Inovalon acquisition. Also, the "curated image" that Avalere has tried so hard to portray is starting to wane with your client base. As more and more staff leave to go to industry or other firms, it's going to be harder and harder to keep up the facade when many of those who left feel the same way. Stop placing so much emphasis on how many times the firm is quoted in news publications - this is great, but focus on changing your staffing model, and keeping smart staff around so the work can get done and people don't burn out. It's a cycle that needs to be fixed.

    Pros

Met and worked with many accomplished and interesting people. The company is on the cutting edge of health care consulting.

    Cons

Though most areas were doing well, some programs weren't succeeding as expected. This caused turnover and restructuring not just in those areas, but across the firm, which made things chaotic at times.

I have been working at Avalere Health full-time

    Pros

In general, the company culture is positive, flexible, and collegal . The work is challenging, and no two days are the same. It's a great place to make friends and hone your healthcare chops. If you like change, a fast-paced, learning environment, this is the place for you. The company focuses on its employees more than other places I've worked, which I found surprising. Free snacks, employee events, and a fairly casual dress-code make the day more pleasant. The management seems to care about the staff and the company's reputation.

    Cons

    - A fair amount of turnover, but it's a consulting firm.
    - Practices feel walled off from each other, but steps are being taken to address that.
    - Depending on team that you're on, there's little variety in the types of projects assigned.
    - The open floor plan is a challenge to work in, but there's enough offices that I can find some quiet spots in which to work.

    Advice to Management

The Inovalon acquisition made the staff very nervous about a change in culture, but Avalere hasn't changed as much as people feared. Things are leveling off and calming down. Management does need to double-down on continuing to address the staff's feedback and make sure that competent, engaging leaders are in charge of teams.
