I worked at Avaya full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay if you negotiate well, some nice coworkers among the jaded and lost souls. Unlimited vacation time - but only offered because they don't want to book the accrued liability. There is little opportunity to take much time off.

    Cons

Constant layoffs and zero job security. I had four bosses in less than three years. The last one laid off most of the department. None of us had been there for more than four years and we were highly productive.

    Advice to Management

Grow revenues instead of cutting heads. Don't trust new/recent VP hires to make decisions about the careers and lives of loyal employees.

I worked at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent telecommunications history and strong platform in the industry with an incredible customer base. Brilliant people in the R&D who mostly came from Bell Labs (an icon in technology development) who innovate solutions beyond capabilities of most competitors in the industry.

    Cons

Always looking to do more with less. Unreasonably high expectations at all levels (especially below executive) without the proper dollar investment to match. Takes to long to bring new innovative solutions to market causing company to miss the window of opportunity for hitting the market strong ahead of competitors.

    Advice to Management

Establish an executive leadership team who truly has the company and its most valuable asset (employees) best interest at heart. Not their own personal agendas and golden parachute packages as their primary focus. Take care of your people and they will create the business success that will yield loyalty as well as financial stability for everyone.
