I worked at Avaya (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Excellent company with a suoerb product line

    Cons

A junior Nortel, totally mismanaged by the executives

    Advice to Management

Get on the ball executives, you ruined another company

I worked at Avaya full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are some really smart, productive people at Avaya. They are facing challenging times, however, their huge base and increased focus on cloud should keep them very relevant.

    Cons

Lack of street knowledge whether it's thinking they're a networking player (they're not), or what the UC/CC customers are truly looking for. Internally, they could really benefit from a third party consultant to come and clean process, documentation, and roles definition.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the field, they have the best understanding of what the street truly thinks of Avaya, areas to focus, etc.

I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Get to work with some of the best technology on the planet - esp. networking tech. Get to work with customers who are willing to think rather than just buy cisco default.

    Cons

work environment burdened by internal issues - admin. overhead, unsupportive IT and other orgs.

    Advice to Management

trust your people. eliminate arduous data gathering and reporting and use real human management. stop niggling the little crap and show people you really do appreciate them. and get through this damn recapitalization already!

I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Challenging work. Flexible work hours, some work from home opportunities. Strong business acumen among colleagues.

    Cons

Just filed for Chapter 11, so there will be significant cost-cutting, restructuring over the next couple years. Narrow-focused management, very little push for development/growth. Projects are not evaluated based on financial merit but on personal agendas.

    Advice to Management

Manage your PEOPLE first. People are the best resource you have, and without good ones, it doesn't matter how good a business model/product you have.

I have been working at Avaya full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great products, customers, and employees. Pay very competitive. Company will be better off once it emerges from Chapter 11.

    Cons

Years of debt and downsizing have taken their toll. There used to be about 9K employees in New Jersey, now down to under 500. Most R&D jobs have been moved overseas.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so enamored with Silicon Valley. Your real assets are your loyal customers and dedicated employees.
