Company on the decline
Sep 13, 2013 - Customer Support Engineer in Highlands Ranch, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great people and talent actually doing the work. Challenging and engaging work with excellent customers who appreciate what you are doing for them. Ability to learn new technologies.
Cons
Offshoring jobs. Constant layoffs and broken appraisal/rating system. Quotas are set for a certain number of low performers regardless of actual performance. Low or non-existent raises and bonuses. Having a manager who likes you is more important than actual work performed.

Pros
There are so many smart people who work at Avaya. People are very nice, yes, you do have to work longer hours sometimes, but, I rather do it with people I enjoy working with. As the company is in the process of transition, there are so many opportunities for early career employees to learn, to grow, and to develop.
Cons
The compensation structure is not very great here at Avaya. You do not always receive a bonus or a salary raise even you have a great performance. Again, for early career folks, it is not all about money, opportunity and development are very important too.

Pros
Have the ability to work from home
Cons
Constantly cutting employee benefits and perks. Very small or no raises and no bonuses. Continuous restructuring and moving to a younger workforce (i.e. less costly, but fewer skills).

Pros
Avaya has the potential to grow with good business model and communications engagement / services portfolio.
Cons
Some leadership leaks damaging the company's prospects for growth. Human Resources are overestimated, recruiting is not good enough, neither HR has the knowledge of the business; the hiring managers know much better. Front line sales are overpaid compared to other functions also critical for the company. Bonus for those not in front line are not paid or are very low compared with market rate.

Pros
-Work from home option & flexibility -Some of the brightest and best people to work with -Discretionary Time Off (DTO, sometimes referred to as "Unlimited Vacation") can be great for some employees (depends on management). -You will not be bored here -Fast-paced environment -A lot of learning -Good base salary
Cons
-Very lean teams -Very long hours -Over worked employees, some burning out due to the unbearable workloads -No work-life balance due to all the urgent demands that are all priorities and were all due yesterday. Management expects the work to be done with unreasonable timelines all the while you are doing 3-4 people’s jobs as the company downsizes -Poor Senior Leadership -Lack of vision -Too many process changes every time you blink -Performance Management stack ranking against peers (30% High, 55% Middle, 15% Low) -Very little formal training if any -You live and breathe cost cutting -High turnover - colleagues leave and that creates more work for those that stay behind who absorb their work -Huge company debt -Layoffs -Minimal raises and low bonuses even to the high performers -Benefits are below average -Rare 401K match (only when company meets the EBITDA) -Low employee moral -No job security -Senior Management treats hard-working employees who work long hours and do their job as disposable and will even rate them as a low performer due to stack ranking -They do not want you to work charge over-time, but expect you to have the work done

Avaya: Churning and Burning. Who knows where it all goes?
Jun 19, 2008 - Director R&DRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The salaries are good and when they do pay bonuses they are good. At least, before the buyout they were. The future remains to be seen.
Cons
Silo mentality. Constant churn of upper management. No respect for old-timers. Outsourcing pressure just to make the numbers.

Great start to a career but shaky future prospect
Nov 6, 2012 - Senior Manager in Westminster, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Ability to work from home, competitive pay, insurance benefits very good
Cons
Layoffs have happened every quarter in 13 years of working with Avaya. It creates a silo environment of employees always looking over their shoulder for the next layoff. The vision is focused on saving today at the sacrifice of tomorrow. The bonuses look great on paper but the last 8 years we haven't received the full bonus. The last 5 years we haven't even come close to the full bonus. Some have received no bonus. There is limited career progression above senior manager especially for women.

Pros
Good to work for Good compensation at entry level Good work life balance
Cons
Exposure to new technologies is limited and only few teams get it Bonus is uncertain and depends on company performance directly irrespective of your band /level

Good Company With Too Much Emphasis on Management
Nov 24, 2008 - Member Of Technical Staff in Westminster, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Avaya is a good employer when it comes to opportunities requiring your existing skillsets as well as the ability to learn new and expand existing skillsets. The technical community tends to be top-notch and Avaya products and services are generally the best in the business. Avaya has a large amount of intellectual property (e.g. patents) and the potential to submit patents for the company and be rewarded with a bonus for doing so. The benefits are good too, with descent healthcare and vacation benefits.
Cons
Promotions: There are generally no promotions above the MTS level at Avaya. Promotions to DMTS are extremely rare, but it means beyond exceptional performance YoY for at least 5 years in a row. In ten years, I have seen only 1 person earn a promotion to CMTS and 2 earn DMTS. Also: there are also two pay plans. Be careful when changing between the two because the DMTS can be easily lost when going back and forth between the same pay grade in the "Management Pay Plan" (MGR) and the "Techncial Pay Plan" (MTS/DMTS). Politics: I would compare the politics at Avaya to that of the U.S. Congress. It is extremely political and your success or failure rests upon your ability to navigate the political waters. It is very doable, but it takes a certain savvy as well as a certain type of personality.

Mediocre Company in Survival Mode
Sep 1, 2022 - Product Manager in Thornton, CORecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Super flexible work - 100% remote at this point Not micromanaged
Cons
Company and revolving leadership are all obsessed with cost-cutting Transition to Cloud and Subscription models are not successful Old-school (1980s) mentality about work Company culture is toxic and most employees are ready to retire Not agile in the least No innovation - always playing catch up to competitors Steady salary but almost no bonuses and no promotions over the last 8 years I've been there No training, no support - you're on your own to just 'figure it out' Other employee personalities are a major obstacle - pessimism about change abounds
