I worked at Avera Health part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Dept manager listened to concerns and suggestions. I learned a lot here. Good culture.

    Cons

Upper management felt my position was disposable. Benefits should be more affordable.

    Advice to Management

Make benefits package more affordable. Don't make comments minimizing the importance of positions of your employees. Recognize that some non-contract positions require more skills and knowledge than they are given credit for.

I worked at Avera Health (More than a year)

    Pros

The hospital management is truly supportive. There are many opportunities to expand skill levels and for advancement. Have never worked with a kinder, more genuine, and hard working supervisory team. The hospital was beautiful, the food outstanding, and the patient rooms and common areas were inviting and conducive to a therapeutic milieu.

    Cons

The pay was lower than competitors, but working conditions made it well worth the difference. Unfortunately, there were a few jealous, gossipy RNs who tried to undermine promising new hires. Watched it happen to others, and it was the one reason I was glad to leave for travel nursing.

    Advice to Management

Be careful of the old timers who are jealous of their positions and target new potential 'competitors'

I worked at Avera Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay on the lower end of average but livable.
    Very caring staff and coworkers.
Buildings are newer or being remodeled.

    Cons

Leadership changes the "truth" based on their audience.
CEO uses religion to keep his flock in line but everyone knows that he can't be trusted.
Avera expects all employees to be loyal but offers no loyalty in return.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with your employees. Listen to those who are actually doing the work...sometimes their ideas are quite valuable. Show loyalty to your employees...don't let someone go after 25 years because there is a cheaper alternative...that employee was loyal to you for 25 years.

I worked at Avera Health full-time

    Pros

Excellent benefits, many truly serving the patients and living the mission outlined by the Presentation sisters. Pleasant, up-to-date facilities.

    Cons

    Rapid employee turn over rate.

    Advice to Management

Explore departments with a low employee turnover and implement changes in your own clinic to reduce turn over.

I worked at Avera Health full-time

    Pros

They do seem to have a mission and care about the patients and their employees.

    Cons

Advancement can be tough, they don't weigh internal promotion as much as other places over hiring externally. As well as the fact that the healthcare industry seems to be cutting costs everywhere right now, and that starts with employees.
