I have been working at Avera Health (Less than a year)

    Pros

Strong mission base, flexible with scheduling, pay and benefits available, those in leadership positions are very supportive of each other.

    Cons

In their hopes of trimming things from the budget, often when a person quits, they choose not to fill that position, which I feel decreases the quality of service.

I have been working at Avera Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you like working as if you are not working at all because of the people that you work with, than work at Avera. Where you can find accommodating and accepting colleagues and workmates.

    Cons

I really cannot think of any right now. Maybe if there is one it might be the fear of losing someone because we take care of very old people which we tend to treat as family because of long term care.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up and you all have your hearts in the right place. Thanks!

I have been working at Avera Health (More than a year)

    Pros

Job security. Pay is average. Co-workers are great to work with. Recently changed PTO policy to help employees have more pad time off.

    Cons

Changing work place policy has provided a micro-management culture. Every movement is monitored. Management creates a work environment where character assassination is viewed as a positive career move. Healthy activities are viewed as potential actionable write ups. Nepotism is an everyday reality. Equipment that helps maintain a healthy body is denied when requested. Not a family friendly environment. Colleagues have had situations where daycare closed or a child was sick and then were publicly shamed for it.

    Advice to Management

Create a work environment where employees should not concerned with whether or not going to the bathroom or the recycling bin is considered a disciplinary action. Provide equipment when requested. Remember that you are a Health Care provider and maybe adopt some of that into your polices.

I worked at Avera Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the nurses do care about their patients. If you are a brand new nurse with no experience, it is easy to get a job.

    Cons

Very high turnover rate (assuming from burnout). Too many brand new nurses in critical areas (Avera seems to thrive on new nurses and doesn't seem to seek experienced nurses). Hard to get vacation and must be put in 6 months in advance (many staff carry up 300 hours of PTO). High patient to nurse ratio/ Avera gave key staff members (nurses) a pay cut after a bad quarter/ Avera recently had to pay back wages to nursing staff after violation of breaks. Poor management that has not been properly trained. VERY POOR WORK/LIFE BALANCE. Wages are low (after seven years I left Avera, starting wage at new job "not avera" was over $2.00 more an hour.) Very clicky, back biting atmosphere with management being part of the environment.

    Advice to Management

You are there to manage, not be facebook friends.

I have been working at Avera Health full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great health insurance rates. Some tuition reimbursement programs available for nursing, but contract to work for Avera is required.

    Cons

Management and Human Resources don't follow ADA laws, you're just a number and easily replaceable. High turnover rate.
Quality care given to patient's not appreciated, only how fast you get thing's done.
Education and experience level aren't considered with certain positions, and compensation.

    Advice to Management

Don't play favorites. Consider the life circumstances of each employee, be accomodating. Follow ADA laws and Dr's orders for work scheduling.

I have been working at Avera Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Compensation is good for this area. People are friendly and professional. Manager's are focused on making employees happy. Family friendly work environment. Plenty of overtime and extra pay opportunities.

    Cons

PTO is confusing. Have 21 total days to begin, however 6 of those days are for holidays. Which actually only leaves 3 weeks. Job Description are not inline with actual work functions. Some positions hire under qualified people for there actual functions, which creates a revolving door.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on making the employee's matter. Benefits especially PTO could be more competitive with regional standards.

I have been working at Avera Health full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are amazing and no matter what your position in the organization you can see how your work impacts the patients care. Overall, Avera works hard to be competitive compensation by doing ongoing market analysis per job. I think the work life balance is definitely promoted by all department managers and administration. I think the great thing about Avera is the on going 1 on 1 sessions that are mandatory once to twice per month. Management and administration takes pride in keeping the communication open with all its' employees.

    Cons

No matter where you work there is always cons. I definitely think they could work on helping employees with their career goals and show them how and what opportunities they should take to fulfill those goals.

    Advice to Management

Just keep on with listening to both the patients and all employees to make sure Avera stays as the leading provider of healthcare within South Dakota and the Midwest.
