I worked at Avery Dennison (More than 8 years)

    Pros

-They have great benefits with fairly low cost health insurance.
-I worked with some great people while I was there. Some great people from the GOLD program, but they all seemed to get fed up and leave or find better opportunities.

    Cons

Key motivating factors were missing for me: Autonomy and purpose.
Way too many decision makers make it difficult to make things happen. Lots of politics and people rolling over to the newest leader's train of thought on how to win. It was often an emperor's new clothes situation.

One major example was when Paxar was acquired, the idea was to centralize and globalize operations to share best practices and expertise. After failing at this for 8 YEARS, leadership did a 180 and is in the process of DE-centralizing operations.

    Advice to Management

Make it more of a meritocracy instead of an old boys club.
Make decisions and execute them quickly; don't take 8 years for a failing strategy to change.

I worked at Avery Dennison full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

In my years at Avery Dennison, I had a constant stream of learning and growth opportunities and the compensation package was excellent. Having started in an assembly job, I eventually got to see the world. Treated generously on exit.

    Cons

Work life balance is very poor in higher roles, especially those of a global nature where a full days work is expected before evening conference calls. A company so large can not guarantee every manager makes every decision in alignment with it's principles and there are spot issues.

    Advice to Management

Dial back the speed at which GOLD's are promoted. The weakest point of Avery is people management skills and promoting those that have never experienced proper guidance to a level in which they won't be closely coached is going to exasperate the issue over time.

I worked at Avery Dennison (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits. Lots of resources to fund projects if prioritized. Good pay. For the most part good people in the trenches but all are overworked.

    Cons

Layers upon layers of management. Focused 100% on the latest quarter / year. High pressure and poor work/life balance (contrary to what they say)

    Advice to Management

The rest of the associates notice when long term (read higher paid) people are eliminated. As you might assume this does not do much to improve moral or company loyalty.

I worked at Avery Dennison full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

While not cutting edge, you will learn the basic fundamentals of a Fortune 500 company. If you get into one of their development programs, you will see a cross section of the business.

    Cons

Not too innovative, focus is on commodity markets, which isn't exactly profitable long term. Short term view, often laying off people in order to help with earnings expectations.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid of smaller businesses that may not be high growth, but consistently deliver bottom line results. Respect your employees.
