I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For years Avid has been one of the best places to work for an engineer. The projects were (and really still are) exciting, the film and television market place is interesting and the management was knowledgeable.

    Cons

Since the change in upper management, Avid has become a terrible place for an engineer. They are now tracking software engineers by how many lines of code you check in, which is totally the wrong thing to measure. The CEO stands up and says everything is great and everyone pop champagne. A few weeks later another round of layoffs. Avid has consistently laid off the best of the best in engineering, losing a huge portion...

    Advice to Management

Get rid of CEO and upper engineering management. Put back someone who knows the business.

    Pros

Great products to work on if you're actually in the audio or video industry. At the "worker bee" level, it's an "all-hands on deck" approach, where people pull together and bust their butts to get a new release out, partially because so many of your friends work in the business using your products to make a living. Good benefits, too, and a pretty good work/life balance (unless you were anywhere near shipping something--then...

    Cons

Executives and mid-level management are incompetent at actually managing this company. Lewis Hernandez is a man with zero insight into the industry his products support, his micro-managing damages the company, and the people he has hired at the VP level have been failures. His attempt at turning Avid into a "services" company will probably fail, and Avid has also basically abandoned its mid-tier customers, and look to...

    Advice to Management

Quit, or sell Avid then be made redundant. What Avid needs is leadership that understands the market Avid serves, not the ones its in which its executives were employed in their previous jobs.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good product lineup. Company products are the market leaders in many sectors. Burlington offices are pretty. Pay and benefits are competitive. Easy job.

    Cons

Recent brain/talent drain. Management is lost, has no concrete direction. Product managers have no ideas and/or are not trying to develop their products; most features and new products are born out of engineering with little or no real customer interaction. Engineering is throwing things at the wall to see what sticks because nobody else is setting a clear direction. Most of engineering is fighting fires most of the time...

    Advice to Management

Pick a direction and communicate it to the company. Hire some product champions that will figure out what the market wants and lead.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time

    Pros

It was a fast paced, technical environment. Great for those who are creative and also want to learn a variety of technologies in a short amount of time.

    Cons

Executives are highly compensated individuals because they're expected to lead a company through the hills and valleys of today's global economic challenges. If anyone could do it, we'd all be applying for the job. A lot of families were hurt by a continuim of bad decisions within a poorly managed company.

    Advice to Management

At the end of the day; you own the balance sheet. Many of us would love to have a job where we could say we lost millions because of soft markets. Being good operationally is no substitute for creative business management...hence the stock price. Speak as if you do "own" it. Use the words "I" or "We" for the good and the bad news.

I have been working at Avid Technology

    Pros

Avid has a history of industry-leading products and people on the ground who are genuinely competent and dedicated. Engineers, product managers, and ground-level sales people do this because they love it. Employees have bands, do freelance video work on the side, and plainly love being involved in media.

    Cons

Avid's completely incompetent upper management and woefully self-deluding reporting structure have lead to a company that continues to lie to itself about its potential and effectiveness, all while circling the drain. If you want a lesson in how to destroy an engineering company, Avid over the last few years is a great example. Most importantly for engineers, a great deal of their time is spent managing the incompetence...

    Advice to Management

Stop lying to your employees on a semi-annual basis, and stop lying to shareholders. Nobody within the Avid organization believes a word said by any executive, and the annual exodus of post-layoff employees fleeing to saner companies should have served as a wake up call a few years ago. Perhaps you think you can replace competent, experienced engineers with incompetent contract labor, but this mediocrity is reflected...

    I worked at Avid Technology

    Pros

-Folks are friendly but tense lately due to layoffs. -Nice building and working environment

    Cons

-Business support model and third-party ecosystem is weak. -The video business ad dollars is moving to the Cloud and Internet but Avid core business is still stuck with traditional broadcasting stations(NBC, ABC, ZDF,etc). -Expect stiff competitions from Netflix, BrightCove, and the like. -Expensive management team still yet to show any positive improvements and results.

    Advice to Management

Too little, too late. Fire sales?.

I have been working at Avid Technology

    Pros

    * The people - we are like a family. It's rare that you see software engineers working with the same company over a decade. * The products - the stuff we make is used to make the most watched and listened to entertainment out there. * A couple of our recent acquisitions could be very potent if their integration is executed properly.

    Cons

    * How many many more VPs can we hire while still not allowing for new positions in necessary areas like QA. * Management has hoped for significant attrition in order to move more development offshore. * Management doesn't understand how challenging it is to develop real-time audio and video processing products like ours. This is probably the largest contributing factor to my previous 2 cons. * Employees spend too...

    Advice to Management

Eliminate half of the VPs. The only thing they are doing is distancing you from your products and your greatest resource, your talented employees. Learn to communicate with your employees. We are just filling in the communication void with our own negative thoughts.

I have been working at Avid Technology

    Pros

The product area is very interesting. There is a lot of very sophisticated and complex technology in use. Avid does not scrimp on developer tools. Your co-workers will be extremely smart and for the most part personable. Line management is very good and tend to be good people. The people there (staff and lower management) are some of the best around anywhere. Turnover has been very low, the company is full of veterans....

    Cons

Unfortunately the company is moving heavily into overseas outsourcing, they have deals with pretty much any country which is doing outsourcing. There is little to no job security after two rounds of quarterly layoffs with more layoffs expected next quarter. The cubicles are noisy, dirty and dingy, office furniture is broken down, old and stained. Frankly disgusting actually.

    Advice to Management

It is your employees and their hard work who will dig the company out of its hole if permitted to. Don't forget who built the company and who can save it. Rank and file engineers are not the people who caused these problems, they have long known where the problems are and were not permitted to solve them. Laying off experienced staff and hiring cheap overseas contractors with no domain knowledge and no personal commitment...

I have been working at Avid Technology full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The company has totally changed its direction from point products to an overarching platform strategy. The team gets deeply involved and engaged in this new direction and the technology stack in use is cutting edge. The fun has returned after a few funless years. Now we are building the operating system for the media industry.

    Cons

The only partially annoying topic is the fact, that not all employees are fully behind the new Avid Everywhere strategy, however the new leadership team is directing well towards a common alignment.

    Advice to Management

Continue to direct the company towards the new platform direction.
