I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

For years Avid has been one of the best places to work for an engineer. The projects were (and really still are) exciting, the film and television market place is interesting and the management was knowledgeable.

    Cons

Since the change in upper management, Avid has become a terrible place for an engineer. They are now tracking software engineers by how many lines of code you check in, which is totally the wrong thing to measure. The CEO stands up and says everything is great and everyone pop champagne. A few weeks later another round of layoffs. Avid has consistently laid off the best of the best in engineering, losing a huge portion...

    Advice to Management

Get rid of CEO and upper engineering management. Put back someone who knows the business.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Very interesting products and a lot of great people.

    Cons

Bad location. The current management team is more interested in the stock price rather than employees.

    Advice to Management

    Focus more on employees.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time

    Pros

Good suit of products. Strong brand name

    Cons

The company as a whole did not handle the shift in the media industry very well. It was also mismanaged for several years which I guess allowed Louis and his crew to take over. They've stopped the bleeding of money but it's clear they are out of their depth when it comes to growing the company. Also the CEO is thought "Too Small to Fail" was really original.

    Advice to Management

    Leave.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Super cool technology, most employees (in every department) were musicians and creative types.

    Cons

Leadership and many co-workers were simply unethical. Huge salary disparities. Employees and directors cheating on their spouses with company employees and in company parties was common. HR's job was always simply to show employees how corporate was right and you were wrong.

I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great products to work on if you're actually in the audio or video industry. At the "worker bee" level, it's an "all-hands on deck" approach, where people pull together and bust their butts to get a new release out, partially because so many of your friends work in the business using your products to make a living. Good benefits, too, and a pretty good work/life balance (unless you were anywhere near shipping something--then...

    Cons

Executives and mid-level management are incompetent at actually managing this company. Lewis Hernandez is a man with zero insight into the industry his products support, his micro-managing damages the company, and the people he has hired at the VP level have been failures. His attempt at turning Avid into a "services" company will probably fail, and Avid has also basically abandoned its mid-tier customers, and look to...

    Advice to Management

Quit, or sell Avid then be made redundant. What Avid needs is leadership that understands the market Avid serves, not the ones its in which its executives were employed in their previous jobs.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Avid Technology full-time

    Pros

Great people to work with. Do some interesting things in digital media handling. The company future looks bright. They have recaptured the thought leader position.

    Cons

The company is having a hard time with the transition to a performance based rewards system. Since this appears to be something new for employees who have been with the company for any amount of time. This includes the Management layer. This means that receive huge amount of recognition for relatively small contributions while others get no recognition for very significant contributions.

    Advice to Management

Make recognition more evidence based rather than on unsupported opinions. Rewards are more tied to vague opinions rather than a concrete evidence. It makes it random who will be recognized and who are snubbed.
