    I worked at Avinger full-time

    Pros

I loved being a part of the Avinger team. This company is made up of employees who genuinely care about one another and also care about the product itself. Avinger has a very welcoming environment with employees who truly want to work hard and do their best.

    Cons

I can't think of any cons at this time :)

    Advice to Management

Keep pushing for Pantheris! It will be successful because it is an amazing product.

I worked at Avinger full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great culture, autonomy, great benefits, ran by seasoned medical device professionals, no micromanagement, best in class technology

    Cons

High turnover, not growth oriented, positioned to protect current business so they can eventually sell the company. Comp is so widely variable, if business shifts, you go broke. Especially without an outpatient strategy.

    Advice to Management

Revert to 2013 strategy and give outpatient labs the capital for free or on loan. Develop a portable capital component so you can penetrate the OPL sector with catheter-only sales. Consider partnering with local distributors to manage cases in existing accounts, so Avinger-based sales staff can concentrate on opening new accounts. Reps currently cover cases like BSX, Medtronic and Abbott while only maintaining 2-5 hospitals...

      Cons

Dynamic environment; constantly changing priorities need to be able to adapt quickly.

      Advice to Management

      Increased communication.

      Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Avinger full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Lumivascular technology really will change the way we treat peripheral vascular disease if the company is either purchased by a solid company with good leadership, or the current leadership is let go. The technology is the legacy of Dr. John Simpson, a brilliant, innovative, and yet down-to-earth founder of the company, and he is the one bright spot in the leadership at this point.

      Cons

Management has no idea what they are doing. The senior leadership does not know how to lead, edify, and mentor their fellow leaders in middle management, and one of the middle managers is the most arrogant, micro-managing, deceitful glory grabbers I have ever seen. Senior leadership seems to be blind to the problems this guy has caused, and continues to cause, as he decimates his region, and loses customers right and...

        Negative Outlook

I worked at Avinger full-time for more than 3 years

        Pros

Rank and file employees are generally nice, easy to get along with. People here like to do things together like go running over lunch or go out to eat; they want to be friends, not just coworkers.

        Cons

Technical design leadership is extremely weak (read: CTO sucks). Product design is 100% top-down from the CTO, who insists on making all decisions himself because he doesn't trust his very qualified engineers. Engineers basically place POs on his behalf, weather the wrath of vendors who get frustrated with unreasonable flip-flopping (rightfully so), or are simply his CAD monkeys. His decisions are almost never...

        Advice to Management

FIRE THE CTO. All show and no substance. The only things he's experienced in are creating the illusion of making progress and taking credit for himself. I GUARANTEE product would be shipped by now and not perpetually stuck in R&D if it wasn't for him and his nonsensical justifications. Get him out of the way and let your engineers do actual engineering work.

          Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

          I worked at Avinger

          Pros

You are helping people fight PAD, it's rewarding and you can feel proud about it. Also, you're at the forefront of innovation. And you get to work with brilliant minds like Dr. Simpson and a few passionate folks.

          Cons

It'a total corporate office with little culture. Management is not transparent.

I have been working at Avinger full-time for more than a year

          Pros

Hands down, the best group of people I've worked with over my 10-year career in the device/biotech industry. We are small, lean, and every role at Avinger has the opportunity to make a big impact on the future success of the company, and more importantly, the positive future health outcomes of the patients our technology serves. A highly collaborative environment with leaders who are driven, tireless, passionate, but...

          Cons

We move at a fast pace ,and that is NOT for everyone. We are transparent about the challenges and growing pains we face, but if you love the structure and slowness of a big company, you might not like it here, and that's ok. This is a place where you will never hear the phrase, "that's not in my job description", we work in small teams where it's all hands on deck, all the time. We love what we do, and the patients we...

            StarStarStarStarStar
              Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Avinger

              Pros

Working with a lot of great people with a lot of passion.

              Cons

Because it is a small company, changes happen quickly and there isn't always a big budget to figure out the problems.
