I worked at Avista as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Leadership training and mentoring opportunities, lots of learning experiences to work in different departments and learn how the whole company works

    Cons

Very little chance for contract to hire or contract to permanent positions.

    Advice to Management

    Slow down and think

    Pros

Good pay considering the Spokane cost of living. Generally friendly. Reasonably stable. Scott Morris is a great CEO in most ways, but he isn't aware of the problems that occur (and are concealed) at lower levels.

    Cons

This company is not a meritocracy. Office politics rule and you are severely handicapped if you don't heavily network yourself. The claimed corporate culture is that they adhere to high ethics, but in practice there are substantial misrepresentations made in external relationships when necessary to serve ambitious individuals.

    Advice to Management

Culture is almost impossible to change, but make the effort to move towards a meritocracy. This means changing people. The company lacks a functioning means of reporting (anonymously or not) ethical transgressions.

I have been working at Avista full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Freedom to do your work as you see fit, flexibility in your work and schedule

    Cons

Management rarely knows what you are doing and how you do your job, training is great if only they practiced what they preach

    Advice to Management

Culture is not the end all - don't be afraid to manage and quit trying to be everyone's friend. Don't expect your employees to manage for you.

I worked at Avista full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay is good especially for Spokane, most areas in the company are awesome to work for

    Cons

I worked in the Human Resource Department and it was awful! They preach about employee engagement and teaching communication and are probably the examples of what they preach

I worked at Avista as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great people and casual atmosphere

    Cons

Can be dull if you don't like the cubicle or office job for 8 hours a day. Org structure is a bit scattered and hierarchical.

I have been working at Avista as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good company with decent growth potential.

    Cons

You can get lot in the matrix that makes up the organizational structure, lots of lateral opportunity with more responsibility with little compensation increases

    Advice to Management

Reward performance and consider alternate forms of compensation

    Pros

Integrity is key throughout the company.
Improvements have been continual as far as processes and forward thinking goes.

    Cons

More employee parking is needed at the main office site.
I would suggest some generational education for the workplace be added. (3-4 generations of people working together, etc.)

    Advice to Management

I really think the current leadership at Avista is on the right track.
Change is tough, but we have such great employees we can make it and succeed!
