I have been working at BAE Systems USA full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy internal transfers. Wide variety of work to expand skills.

    Cons

Top management is full of retired Air Force. Little diversity of ideas. There are some skills they didn't seem to learn - like how to keep morale up. Decision making is done by edict - they don't care about input from the masses. THIS IS NOT THE AIR FORCE!

    Advice to Management

When making a decision that many have to work with, consider inquiring other staff; they may have a better solution. The brightest and most talented are leaving because it seems upper management doesn't care and their input doesn't matter.

I worked at BAE Systems USA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Large company but easy to work with those from all departments
    - Designs and builds cool products

    Cons

    - Gossip among some employees (always the same ones) destroys morale, erodes trust, and causes good employees to leave
    - Complete lack of training for engineers.
    - Provides virtually no marketable technical skills even those that might be useful for other defense work
    - HR arbitrarily chooses to ignore very qualified candidates in favor of employee family members.
    - Strong biases against individual employees based on their religion, sexual orientation, and political beliefs.
-Prefer to hire out-of state rather than local

    Advice to Management

Start taking your "diversity" policy seriously

I worked at BAE Systems USA full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - 9/80 work schedule
    - Good 401k
    - Peers in Software are knowledgeable and willing to help
    - Good company for entry level developers looking to start their careers

    Cons

The site promotes and assigns software engineers to good projects based more on how well someone is liked rather than how well the person performs. Due to this most mid-level people with 5-8 years experience choose to leave the site after stagnating for years. This has led to a hollowed-out team that has several people with 10+ years experience, quite a few newer people with 0-3 years and very few mid level coders.

Bottom line: If you haven't reached Software Engineer III by your five year anniversary go someplace else because you most likely will never reach it.

    Advice to Management

    - Rotate developers on to new and different projects. Don't put your employees on the same project for years just to satisfy a staffing spreadsheet.

I have been working at BAE Systems USA full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is good. 401k vested from day one. 9/80 work schedule and that 60% of salary folks are ready to retire within 5 years, so there are possibilities.

    Cons

Work force are ready to retire in 5 years or less. Continuous improvement is NON-EXISTENT in this company. No process at all, operations does whatever they want. I have no idea how they get vehicles out the door. When a program is behind schedule, they throw bodies at it and drive hours to the roof. They can't even follow the basic LEAN principles, which is 5S. If you like working for an organize, process driven, continuous improvement company, then this is definitely bot the place for you. As for benefits, its not the best, 2 weeks vacation until 5 years then you get 3. HSA deductible is 3k/ 6k and they only contribute up to $800 for family, other places I have worked contributed over $1500.

    Advice to Management

This is for the York, PA facility: Management especially operations, have been in their positions for over 20-25 (some over 30yrs) in their position so they are set in their old ways. You will be lucky to see 1 hourly folk work at 60% efficient. Their process is still in the 60s or 70s, inefficient, every time a new program comes in, they reorganize the whole facility to accommodate a new program, then 2-3 years from then do it again. Why don't you set up a line that does all your program in one assembly or weld line, they are basically assembled the same way, other companies already do it in one line. Their material warehousing is the worst, they try to shove every material into assembly so the production floor becomes the warehouse and no wonder they lose parts. Get out of the warehouse business, it's not your core competency. When a program gets behind schedule (they always do), they throw bodies at it then lay off the people once they get caught up. Set up your process/facility to adjust to the demands of your customer, that's what a LEAN organization or a world class company looks like.

I have been working at BAE Systems USA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

9/80 work schedule, tuition reimbursement, winning contracts

    Cons

Leadership is like a members only club and based off social capital rather than ability, experience, and drive. Leaders lead by brute force not interested in developing existing talent its a conform or else mentality, don't think just put your head down and do what you are told. Morale is extremely low and with the amount of work coming in I foresee major issues in meeting that growth with the state of affairs internally. Really just an unpleasant work environment and people continue to depart. Tenure is definitely reducing on average, outside the folks that have been here many years already and carry those key friendships amongst the ranks.

    Advice to Management

Hold your leaders accountable for their behavior and in addition to preaching the great place to work unto the lower level ranks, demand it of your leaders and hold them accountable for their behaviors which are counterproductive to the great place to work philosophy. I can tell you it's not happening and live in the banter everyday. For the first time in my career I do not enjoy coming to work.

    Pros

Every other Friday off is a nice benefit.

    Cons

The leadership doesn't enforce any policies, so the organization runs wild. Nobody is ever punished for the trouble they cause by not following the rules, and the good employees end up being criticized and punished for caring enough to say something. Nothing EVER gets fixed.

    Advice to Management

Hire senior managers who actually know how to lead and hold people accountable. Stop blaming the hard workers who bring the dysfunction to your attention, because you choose not to do anything about what they tell you.

    Pros

    - When contracts are available, the job is very stable.
    - If you have experience in the defense industry, you're set for life in this company.
    - If you can deal with he politics and culture, there is room for growth.

    Cons

    - Aging work force that seems to have a cloudy vision as to how they are going to hand off to the next generation.
    - Depending on the department you work in, the work can feel very specialized to the point where you feel like you growth is stagnant.
    - Management employee communications could be better.
    - Benefits used to be better.
    - Company has gotten cheaper over the years, no Christmas Party, bonuses are a joke, med package is not good.

    Advice to Management

    - Communication to team members is key.

A lot of the people are very kind and well meaning. I found that most of my co-workers were helpful and cheerful.

    Cons

Upper Management are very elitist, very conceited, and the overall directive of the company is malicious and not in the publics best interest.

    Advice to Management

Do not ask employees to do things that are unethical or undermine the company.

    Pros

Ten hour days. Work with a team. Pay is okay.

    Cons

Benefits are not that good. Management loves to point fingers. There is NO training. HR is only one person who is never there. Pay should be more but they signed the contract a month before the salary raises came. Plays favoritism. Absolutely no way to promote.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to lead without placing blame on others. Needs to understand about how to build morale. Stop hiring people that you know if their resume does not say they can do the job. Do not be afraid to let employees with a bad work ethic go.
