I worked at BASF Group (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Generally great people. Good benefits. Opportunities to move around a lot if you are open to relocate. Great discounts on lots of different products (cars, appliances, etc.) because BASF supplies everyone with everything.

    Cons

Risk averse. Slow moving. Follows the market rather than leads. Developments are led by chemists which frequently benchmark new product developments against BASF products, rather than the market leaders. If you are selected as a "high potential", you can walk on water, regardless of the poor quality of your work or lack of respect for and by your coworkers. European organization often pushes for launch of products in other markets that don't fit the market needs all in the name of "globalization". Very evident "diversification: efforts for new hires, leading to unqualified people being hired because of their gender or ethnicity.

    Advice to Management

Hire the best people for a job. Make more of an effort to connect to your subordinates. BASF has a huge stable of very smart people, and they would rather improve existing products than create new ones. Be a market leader instead of a follower!

I worked at BASF Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good standard benefits (healthcare, time off, etc). But also lots of "Extras" like an onsite fitness center and classes, flexible hours, etc.

    Cons

Lots of bureaucracy, employees are not trusted or empowered to make even minor decisions, constant fear of layoff.

    Advice to Management

    COMMUNICATE to employees

    Pros

    Solid, stable company.
Always moving forward, growing markets and opportunities.
Better than average compensation, including benefits
Size, scope and breadth of company makes movement and development of talent more likely

    Cons

German-based company, with a European mindset (which sometimes conflicts with American methods and practices)
The global business is clearly centralized in Germany, just as it is with American-owned and based companies. This can sometimes make for issues when styles and practices don't match. Europe and America do have differing philosophies on work in certain areas, some better, some not.

    Advice to Management

Generally, management is very good, especially on the European side and leadership.
