I have been working at BB&T full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very stable environment. There is tons of institutional knowledge at BB&T. The company STILL has a pension and 401(k). Benefits start immediately. The pay is fair at the company. BB&T strongly pushes it's mission, vision and values consistently. The CEO stands firm on the values and he seems like a fair man.

    Cons

Benefits are expensive. Company has lots of employees who have been in place for decades which makes the company associates resistant to change and hard to advance. Many of my teammates don't even use instant messaging. It can be difficult to advance in some areas because those associates who have been in roles for literally decades. It's also a "gotcha" environment that breeds mediocrity. Ultra conservative and the company is a "follower". As an example the company's mobile app just started allowing (2015) mobile check deposits through the app. Most banks initiated that process many years before. Company has issues with diversity at mid and high levels of management.

    Pros

Bonuses can be good. Friendly culture below the management level.

    Cons

BB&T wants to be a big bank, but is still operating like a small company. Lack of processes and standards have resulted in a lot of internal issues. Executive Management is out of touch.

    Advice to Management

Implement a culture of continuous improvement and hold people accountable for results.

I have been working at BB&T full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - 401(k) match is excellent
    - Health Insurance coverage is reasonable and opportunity to participate in a wellness program can result in lower premium expenses
    - Generally colleagues are great to work with and the conservative risk appetite has ensured solid financial footing over the years
    - Onsite wellness clinic for common ailments with some free prescriptions available
    - Work/life balance is generally good despite staffing levels

    Cons

    - Extreme cost consciousness has lead to bare bones staffing levels and lower morale
    - Not always prone to promoting from within
    - Culture has changed over the last 5 years from its rooted essence of a community bank that has its community and associates at heart. Focus now seems to be heavily on shareholders with investments into associates diminished.

    Advice to Management

Quit touting the pension as such a wonderful benefit. While potentially a material payout could be achieved, it is after 30+ years of service and the modern workforce just does not work for a single company anymore for that duration of time. Consider re-purposing those funds to boost employee salaries.
