I worked at BBC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A very demanding environment that can lift you up in your reporting career. Training opportunities are excellent, reporting opportunities are immense.

    Cons

The company is too large and the bureaucracy is very heavy to move on, especially in language services. It is not a transparent and clear communication environment

    Advice to Management

The management level should be more transparent and clear in communication.

    Pros

Security, established brand, training, creative freedom, great people always striving to do their best for the public. Longer contracts than other companies, more development opportunities.

    Cons

Nepotism. Bizarre hiring process. Unsympathetic management at times. More could be done to encourage young people of different backgrounds to stay at the BBC.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff & give them more support and resources.

I worked at BBC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great support infrastructure, h&s, insurance, etc. Looks good on the CV.

    Cons

They rely far too much upon the use of freelance at the sharp end of production. They are no ways to complain about anything without being labeled a trouble maker. Slow to get things to change, far too much red tape and no one wanting to take responsibility for things. If you are forward thinking best avoid them and work for an indie.

    Advice to Management

Employ some high-quality people and reward them in positions of program making. Stop using freelance to fill positions. It's expensive and wasteful and breeds a bad culture, everyone is too afraid of not being asked back again if they try to speak out.

I have been working at BBC (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Feels very much at the centre of things. Using the latest technologies.

    Cons

Big company, so it depends where you work, but many people were putting in long hours in the teams I worked in. Not good if you have a family yourself.

I have been working at BBC full-time

    Pros

A very nice, supportive atmosphere. Lots of training opportunities available and chances to go to large tech conferences. Working with new technologies. Experimentation and creativity is encouraged. The pension scheme is generous.

    Cons

Below market rate salaries. No bonus. There are many perks available to staff and these are often mentioned in job ads, however, they're only available with a salary sacrifice. The low (but not terrible) salaries means they can't hang onto top talent.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the layers of bureaucracy, open source more of your code (as per your public service mandate).

I have been working at BBC full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

World renowned company, great offices, great people, great products with massive reach. Lots of work variety, plenty of challenges. Chances to work across many different platforms, with different technologies and lots of great people. Lots of celebs walking around!

    Cons

The pace can be a little slow, maybe not for you if you're looking for fast turnaround, short timescale projects.

    Pros

Worldwide recognition of the BBC brand. You're working with exceptional talent at the top of their game. Can be supportive of great ideas (but see below). Well resourced.

    Cons

Can take forever to get new ideas going. Ridiculous bureaucracy. Elevated high opinion of itself can blind people to the threat of rivals.

    Advice to Management

Keep an eye on the opposition. Cut through the bureaucracy.

I worked at BBC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Core business is interesting and exciting, touches on most of the UK population.

    Cons

Top heavy, out of touch, pervading aura of arrogance.

    Advice to Management

Drama, comedy, sport, music and news are being produced to a higher standard by other people in the marketplace. Where do you fit in now, and how does that justify an outdated poll tax funding system?
