I worked at BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS full-time

    Pros

If you are keen, interested and scientific-minded, it is a great place to be hear about current research on HIV/AIDS, epidemiology, population health. There are lectures and talks by industry experts on a regular basis. OK benefits, but then this falls under the same process as other health authorities, so this isn't even really a plus.

    Cons

You read the title - this place is absolutely the worst! There are major HR issues here and it is quite disengaging. They do not know how to treat employees well and do not appreciate hard work. The directors do not know how to run the place and most make up solutions to issues. There are no standards or protocols on any process (hiring, wage increase, tech requests, etc.) and they give different answers to questions/requests...

    Advice to Management

Company culture is created from the top down. If the leaders of the organization does not embody the culture they want to foster, it will not trickle down to the employees. The culture in the Cf-E is quite possibly the worst I have ever seen of any organization I have worked for (yes, McDonalds and the Gap included). Treat your employees well and you wouldn't have to spend time retraining/rehiring new ones. Culture will...

I worked at BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS full-time

      Pros

It looks good on your resume. That is it.

      Cons

There is no transparency from senior management. A member of the C suite directly told me that this is not a place to build a career, but rather a place to work for a year or two and then move on. Over my tenure there it became very clear to me that they view their staff as utterly disposable. Very low pay, especially considering the cost of living in Vancouver. Insane micromanagement. There is often pressure to...

      Advice to Management

Managers should be trained in how to properly manage and engage staff. Same goes for HR. They should revisit the idea that this is a place to have a job rather than a career.

      Pros

Great atmosphere to work in Able to develop new skills

      Cons

Management is somehow micromanaging and yet oblivious to many aspects of work. Most work could be done at home but they do not have the wherewithal or technical acumen to allow this to happen.

      Advice to Management

      Stop micromanaging employees.

I have been working at BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS full-time

      Pros

Great vacation, sick leave and benefits

      Cons

This is hands down the worst job I have ever had. Management does not care about its employees and their contentment, only that the work gets done. There is no room for advancement or raises, something that was made clear during my interview. I took the job because I was desparate but now I'd rather be unemployed.

      Advice to Management

Take ten minutes to actually talk to and listen to your employees.
