I worked at BCMS Corporate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Typical sell-side M&A experience, generalist focus. 60+ hours per week.

Great culture, everyone was very easy to get along with.

    Cons

Compensation package was poorly structured and significantly below market. There is NO annual bonus. "Commissions" are only paid out when your assigned deals close, so don't expect any bonus for your first 18 months.

Therefore, your "bonus" isn't tied to your performance, but to the performance of the pitching team, the deal leaders and the hourly-paid cold-calling team.

    Advice to Management

Management - You've built a good culture, but I witnessed a lot of turnover at the lower levels. Offer your IB team a regular bonus structure and outline a path for development / promotions.

Analysts & Associates - build your experience and lateral to a MM who will reward you for your time

    Pros

Great boss who really cares about your
success and your work/life balance. Easy-going coworkers who make the office environment relaxed and fun. You won't be expected to work a bunch of extra hours or spend time in the office on a weekend.

    Cons

Pay is a little low, but you can move up in the company.

    Advice to Management

Really enjoyed working for Brian H, he is one of the best bosses I've ever had.

I worked at BCMS Corporate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great work environment where management is equally focused on running a productive investment bank while providing a balanced lifestyle for junior bankers. High marks for rewarding strong performance with rapid career progression and mentorship from senior bankers and management. Not only was I surrounded by experienced professionals interested in helping me get better at my job, but members of management continue to take an interest in my career after I have moved on from the company.

    Cons

Some logistical challenges related to working with colleagues overseas. Compensation is slightly below market, though this is mitigated by promotion opportunities and balanced lifestyle.

    Pros

Opportunities are abundant within BCMS. The ability to learn and grow with the company is available and accessible for all employees who show the initiative and excitement to grow. BCMS has created an atmosphere within the Investment Banking Industry that is without the politics/ game playing. The process is what it is, there are no slight of hand for our clients

    Cons

Some challenges are that you may not be in the same area as your peers/colleagues due to the international reach of BCMS. You will have to adjust to numerous time zones.

    Advice to Management

Continue to be accessible to your employees as the company grows.

    Pros

Good people in first line management. Good trusting clients, who unfortunately will be taken advantage of.

    Cons

There is a huge market opportunity that many of BCMS's competitors are capitalizing on, but this firm hasn't a clue how to craft and execute on a marketing strategy. And when they are fortunate enough to engage a client, there is not enough staff (due to constant turnover and internal political battles on who to hire) to do the work of selling the client's business. Clients wait for months (despite paying the high upfront fees), before BCMS can even get organized to assign a deal team. When they do get assigned, the deal teams are so overstretched, no actual work (besides an intro conference call) gets done for many more months. There is a huge backlog of unsold businesses because the two guys at the top in the US still think they are working at Goldman Sachs instead of at a business brokerage. Wonder when the UK owners will wise up to whats being done, and what isn't. Five years after the launch of the US subsidiary and still no one knows who BCMS is...

    Advice to Management

UK owners need to come to terms with where the real problems with this business reside.

    Pros

An atypical investment bank where work-life balance is highly encouraged. Paid time-off, personal days and sick days are provided.

Employees gain experience across a plethora of industries and working with a wide variety of clientele. Almost every employee has direct client access.

Started in the UK which provides a successful and proven business model, highly effective and competent at selling different types of companies.

    Cons

Lack of transparency and no clear indication of responsibilities, or the chain of command.

Success fees are not clearly allocated. They seem to be at the commencement, but changes in deal teams, new employees joining, existing employees leaving, and colleagues providing assistance, are some of the primary factors that create confusion as to what is due to whom when transactions close.

No investment in employee's advancement, education, certifications, etc. It creates either complacency or expectation of turnover.

Also, be sure to negotiate any salary increases prior to starting employment because it could be years before a raise is given (Cost-of-living increases included in this statement!)

Finally, employees are told that they can expect a discretionary bonus based on personal and company performance. However, don't expect any bonus. No year-end, holiday, performance bonus, etc.

    Advice to Management

Frequent interactions with employees and performance reviews.
Recommend a clear chain of command, and the ability to communicate directly with management.
    Support your employees.

Don't make promises unless you're planning on keeping them.

I worked at BCMS Corporate full-time

    Pros

great introduction to M&A, high level of client exposure upon commencement, autonomy to manage individual projects within a structured framework, job security

    Cons

flat hierarchical structure with no real opportunities for progression within existing role, only job rotation. Divide between SME and mid-market divisions in part due to difference in commission/pay, focus is very much on volume of deals with too structured process rather than successful outcome, very limited L&D.

    Advice to Management

consider revising structure to be able to offer promotion opportunities
