I have been working at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule, for the most part people are easy to work with. Im able to work from home at least once a week.

    Cons

Constantly changing leadership, always changing directions and vision. Every time there is a change in leadership it's disruptive and yearly goal are reset. Has lost a lot of veterans with legacy knowledge. Everyone appears to be new and trying to figure out their roles and responsibilities.

    Advice to Management

Work on employee retention and moral

I worked at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Life and work is balanced. Most of time the schedules are set reasonable.

    Cons

Management are generally NOT technical at all. They listen to those who likes to talk but not do things. This tends to make managerial decisions wrong and unpractical. The corporate over emphasize "soft skill" rather than concrete skill and end up in a project there are much more people attending meeting and managing than designing, coding and debugging.

    Advice to Management

Do not coil yourself in comfort zone. Keep using new technologies in products. Scrum is not suitable for all groups, such as hardware, firmware or reagent. Not all on-line training are necessary for all employees.

I worked at BD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits (health/dental, 401k, pension, etc.), good people, products make a difference in the lives of others globally, some opportunities for growth

    Cons

Upper management/corporate is out of touch, lots to do and not enough bodies, you will be asked to perform multiple jobs and not paid for it

    Advice to Management

Help people grow by getting them into the right positions. Don't hinder growth and progression for ego.

    Pros

Good pay, benefits, and work-life balance

    Cons

No professional growth opportunities. Finance department is led by unqualified individuals who will do anything to stay at the top and keep you down.

    Advice to Management

Change management tactics and encourage professional skepticism, critical thinking, and work efficiency with your staff. End the hush-hush environment.

I worked at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Earned an opportunity to visit hospitals around the world. Exposed to and trained in numerous research methodologies along with marketing processes. Chartered projects had seemingly limitless budget funds to pursue needed activities, though it felt like overkill.

    Cons

The matrix reporting structure takes time to adjust to and the downside is too many folks on the periphery can affect reviews. Frequent layoff's sadly often took out a few good people along with the under-performers. All of this lead to a culture of analysis paralysis where underlings and mid-level managers were afraid to make decisions; presentations to senior leadership outlining recommendations was often met with the same inaction.

    Advice to Management

The simmering distrust between the Sandy, UT plant and HQ in NJ negatively affected the working relationships of professionals between the two locations. Unsurprisingly, your bad example sets the tone for other around and under you.

    I worked at BD full-time

    Pros

Great people. The company has grown well through acquisition resulting in great growth in share price.

    Cons

Management has a short term view on financials, and not growth through innovation. Additionally growth through acquisition comes at the expense of employees, who end up over worked and unemployed.

    Advice to Management

The truly successful companies are sustained not by management, but workforce that is engaged and dedicated to the company, not looking over their shoulder in fear.

I worked at BD as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Some employees are excellemt, especially those from CareFusion.
    Corporate values were good.

    Cons

With the BD acquisition, the culture and the work has changed, not always for the better. BD valued the CareFusion products they purchased but failed to understand the ethos that made those products desirable. Now there is a huge overlay of BD's 100-year bureaucracy that impedes the company's progress. Many good people have left.

    Advice to Management

I don't see a remedy. This is so often the outcome of corporate acquitisions.

    Cons

Poor management. Very cliqueish which rules the way they manage. Does not care about the customers, only the numbers.

    Advice to Management

Stop at looking at the numbers and take care of your customers

    Pros

The people are amazing, really supportive of each other.

    Cons

Middle management is so thick you can't see through it. Decisions take ages to make. Very VERY political climate. Promotions are unheard of and everyone is concerned with how things look or how everyone FEELS than doing their job or rewarding talent

    Advice to Management

Retain talent, make decisions faster, empower employees
