I worked at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company going through big mergers/acquisition and getting bigger. Probably good for folks who can survive politics.
Average salaries but good pension benefits and PTO.

    Cons

Frequent reorgs, layoffs every 3-6 months. generating lots of uncertainty. Very political environment. This place is all about who you know otherwise chances are your name will be in next layoff list.
Great folks have been moving out or have been pushed out. Not a good place to be in for people bringing any innovative idea. Traditional folks don't get it, management won't recognize it and you'll get kicked out. Good place for average folks who can keep managers/peers "satisfied".
TS management lacks vision, poor leaders at top making it harder for good folks to feel safe.
Lots of inefficiencies in processes, leadership can't be trusted and asking any hard questions will put you in next layoffs list.

I have been working at BD full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pension, 7.5hr/day, PTO for new fathers

    Cons

A lot to list. Almost nothing seems to be good so far. No freedom to operate, controlling all communications up to e-mails. A lot of layered reviews. De-motivating. Don't suggest this environment to anyone. Not enough workplace flexibility, military camp mentality. I am very shocked.

    Advice to Management

Hope you can inspire, empower your employees. Everything starts with trust. Please put the responsibility on the competent employees. Managers with no vision very disappointing.

I worked at BD full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great compensation and benefits, great mission and vision. Career growth (but only if you're willing to move).

    Cons

Very old school, hierarchical company. The leadership team wants to transform into a more modern workplace, but their behaviors contradict this aspiration completely. The company is run by a bunch of old men. If you don't know how to play the political game and are looking to work in a collaborative team environment, this isn't the place for you.

    Advice to Management

Focus on career development for more than just your higher "job groups," your future leaders need your support too. In 10-15 years, all of the organization's talent will have retired, and the company isn't doing much to retain millennials in the way of culture, processes, and org structure.

I worked at BD full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people working in R&D were great. You are working on products that save lives. Good PTO policy, flexible schedule.

    Cons

Chaotic direction from upper management, burned out R&D. Very little work/life balance. Layoffs every September since BD merged with Carefusion. They seem to be outsourcing everything. IT Service is bad. It takes weeks to get anything resolved.

    Advice to Management

Your unrealistic goals are making things even harder to produce a quality product

    I worked at BD full-time

    Pros

Solid company steeped in culture and tradition. Started from humble sleepy roots and morphed into a formidable player in devices and more. Growth was strategically smart. A complete web of products across many segments.

    Cons

Management, Upper Management, VP on, typically bred within and frankly, some, are not good. Short sighted, immature, and lead for self promotion and preservation. A few living in FLKS area that should have been whacked long ago.

    Advice to Management

Listen to everyone. You might be surprised at what you missed before.

I worked at BD as a contractor

    Pros

Great environment to grow within the company. plenty of hours with overtime to spare. A hands on experience with much knowledge to share.

    Cons

The shift I worked on had lousy hours that would take up most of your personal time. the senior management treated employees unprofessionally

    Advice to Management

Take more care of your employees as far as being kind and understanding to they're personal lives.

I worked at BD as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

I was assigned to Digital Health, probably the most interesting projects in the Reston office. The project and proposed roadmap are all very exciting. Being a part of the team that launched/released BD's first consumer mobile app is a very cool accomplishment. For that I am extremely grateful and humbled to be a part of. Also, there were several people on my team that I really enjoyed working with and am so glad to have gotten to know.

    Cons

To summarize in one word: management. To expand, lack of it, and no real sense of ownership from management. I've worked with some great managers in the past, they make you excited to come to work, and get you excited about what's to come. Not here. If you're looking for a job with GREAT culture, GREAT benefits and/or GREAT work/life balance you will not find that here. Everyone comes to work and leaves. Sure you may get to know your coworkers some, but if you take too much time to do that you'll be behind on your work.

    Advice to Management

Not really sure where to start...the problem is bigger than just the Reston office. From my perspective the problem is at the top. Even though Reston is no longer Carefusion, it still feels like we're a consultatnt company to BD. The lack of integration is obvious and makes you feel like you're the hired help, and not a part of the BD family.

Recently management has tried to do some office team building events. The problem is it often feels "too little too late".

Biggest piece of advice, stop letting good talent leave! Though it doesn't really seem like much will chnage, becase it really is just a churn and burn mentality. It's a big reason why I left. Managment keeps saying after this release things will slow down, but they never do. Once they know you can produce at that level, that becomes the new level they expect from you.

I worked at BD full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great company. After acquiring Carefusion, they laid off many people, and outsourced many jobs to offshore. This is in IT department. May not apply to other departments.

    Cons

    Bad Management, Communicatio Gap.

    Advice to Management

I understand you're trying to save money, but you're compromising the quality.
